Red Raiders win 3-1 behind Bowcutt’s 22 kills
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech volleyball (4-2) took down UTRGV (2-4) in four sets on Thursday morning to kickoff the Red Raider Classic.
Sara Bowcutt led the team with 22 kills followed by fellow freshman Elia Dinsmore who had 13. Katelyn Cochran finished with 43 assists while Shelby Ignash again led the team in blocks with seven. Emily Contreras led the team with 17 digs, tying her career high.
Gretchen Sigman and Shelby Ignash each had six kills while Tatum Johnson and Kenna McKenzie both added four. Ignash also led the team with seven blocks, three of which came in the first set. Maddie Smotherman recorded 12 digs as Cochran had eight digs along with three kills.
The match saw 23 total ties and 12 lead changes as neither team had full control of the match. The Red Raiders hit a solid .458 in the first set while holding the Vaqueros to just a .062 hitting percentage to set the tone early and get the nearly 1,100 students in attendance engaged in the match as they took set one 25-17.
UTRGV did just enough to grab set two as they hit .182 but held Tech to a .095 hitting percentage, winning the set 25-21. The Red Raiders flipped the score in set three winning 25-21 as their attack and block got back on track holding UTRGV under .100 again. Dinsmore and Bowcutt combined for 13 of the teams 15 kills in the set and then combined for 10 more kills in the fourth set to close out the match with a 28-26 set win.
