Red Raiders fall to Hornets

Sacramento State defends its home court with sweep
SACRAMENTO, California – The Red Raiders dropped its match to Sacramento State on Friday in three sets.
The Red Raiders (2-2) were led by Shelby Ignash who finished with nine kills, tying her career high, while hitting an efficient .467 on the match. Sara Bowcutt had eight kills while Faith Jordan and Gretchen Sigman each had five. Katelyn Cochran had 34 assists while Emily Contreras led the team with 12 digs followed by Maddie Smotherman who had nine.
The Hornets (2-3) Victoria Marthaler and Charlee Lepp combined for 32 of the teams 50 kills as Lepp hit .379 in the win.
Tech jumped out to an early 12-7 lead in the first set and maintained a solid lead at 17-12 before the Hornets mounted a 13-5 run to take the first set as they hit over .400 in the set, finding their spots and hitting them led by Marthaler who had seven kills in the first set.
The second set was more back-and-forth with it tied all the way to 21-21 with neither team holding more than a four-point lead. The Hornets grabbed a late 23-21 lead but Tech quickly answered with kills from Ignash and McKenzie. Sacramento State and the Red Raiders traded the next two points to force a win-by-two situation that the Hornets quickly took, scoring the next two points to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
The Red Raiders, like the first set, took an early 12-7 lead that forced a Hornets timeout thanks to a 4-0 scoring run off the serve of Smotherman. After the timeout, the Hornets responded with a 5-0 run of their own to take a 15-14 lead after a Red Raider timeout. Tech pushed it to another win-by-two situation by the Hornets prevailed again to complete the sweep.
