Red Raiders drops season opener to Cowgirls

LARAMIE, Wyoming – Texas Tech volleyball opened up its season against a tough Wyoming opponent in front of a record crowd of 2,402. The Cowgirls used the home-court advantage to propel themselves to a 3-1 win on Friday night.
After a close first set that the Cowgirls took 25-21, both teams coasted through the next two sets with the Red Raiders winning set two 25-14 before Wyoming answered back with a 25-11 set three win to re-take the lead. Set one saw 11 ties and lead changes while the following two sets saw just one.
The Red Raider block showed up big in set two as they had four while the Cowgirls had four blocks of their own in set three. The Cowgirls coasted again in set four to win the match as they went on a 12-3 run to close out the match.
Sara Bowcutt, in her first collegiate game, led the Red Raiders with 12 kills on 43 attacks and had a team-high three aces while being solid on serve receive with 28 opportunities and just one error. Gretchen Sigman was solid in her Texas Tech debut, recording seven kills while hitting a team-high .357. Kenna McKenzie had six kills and a pair of solo blocks while Shelby Ignash and Tatum Johnson combined for six kills out of the middle position. Taylor Cook, Elia Dinsmore and Faith Jordan all recorded their first career kills tonight as well.
Cook led the team with 22 assists and had five digs while Katelyn Cochran had five assists, a block and a dig. Emily Contreras sported the libero jersey tonight and led the team with 10 digs while going a perfect 17-for-17 on serve receive opportunities. Maggie Boyd recorded five digs and two aces in her indoor debut and was a perfect 13-for-13 on serve receive.
