Five Red Raiders record double-digit digs as Elia Dinsmore breaks out
LARAMIE, Wyoming – Texas Tech volleyball picked up its first win of the season on Saturday afternoon, taking down St. Thomas (0-1) in a hard-fought five set battle.
The Red Raiders (1-1) had five players in double-digit digs for the first time since November 3, 2021, against West Virginia. Three Red Raiders also had double-doubles including Taylor Cook, Sara Bowcutt and Elia Dinsmore. Those three along with Emily Contreras and Maggie Boyd recorded double figure dig numbers.
Dinsmore shined as she hit .440 with 14 kills and three aces to go along with 12 digs as the freshman made a statement in her first full collegiate match after playing in two of the four sets yesterday. Fellow freshman, Bowcutt, led the team with 15 kills and was in on two blocks. Gretchen Sigman recorded nine kills and was in on five blocks while posting seven digs. Cook finished the match with 42 assists to go along with her 11 digs and also had three aces, three kills and was in on three blocks. Kenna McKenzie had six kills while Shelby Ignash and Faith Jordan combined for seven kills to round out the main attackers for the Red Raiders.
Tech's defense held the Tommies to just a .094 hitting percentage thanks to 11 blocks and the 77 digs. The Red Raiders had more assists and a higher hitting percentage than St. Thomas but the Tommies led in all the other major categories. Despite that, the Red Raiders hung tough and recorded their first win of the season.
The Red Raiders took the first set handily as they scored the first point and didn't relinquish the lead and won 25-17. Tech took a 2-0 lead after winning the second set 25-19. The Tommies battled back to take the third and fourth sets by scores of 25-20 and 25-22, respectively. Tech controlled the fifth set early, and although St. Thomas did not take the lead at any point, the set did see three ties and was forced into a win-by-two situation.
UP NEXT: The Red Raiders will travel to Sacramento next weekend for three matches.
