Newcomer Q&A with Damarion Dennis

LUBBOCK – After one season at Wyoming and one in Corpus Christi, Damarion Dennis is set to wear number one this season at Texas Tech. A San Antonio native entering his junior season, Dennis signed with the Red Raiders in mid-April and joined the program for summer workouts in June. We sat down with him after a July workout to discuss what makes him who he is today and what his expectations and goals are for the upcoming season.
What do you bring to the team on and off the court?
"I can control the game with my pace. Off the court, I can help build chemistry. I take pride in guarding the other team's best player. I feel like I've been an underdog my whole life. That's where my hunger comes from."
What do you want to develop the most in your game?
"I want to develop as a point guard. Get my assist numbers up. I want to be aggressive."
What do you want your teammates and coaches to say about you?
"I want them to say that I'm a hard worker and that I come in every day with high energy. I always do what's best for my team to win."
How do you impact winning?
"Starting on the defensive side. I feel like that's how I impact winning the most. My shot making got me here, but I think I can impact the game the most with my defense."
What do you think makes you unique as a person?
"I feel like I always know how to make my teammates laugh. It can be something that they're going through, I'm going to be there for them. I try to put a smile on their face and brighten their day."
Where did you develop a love for the game?
"My first love was football but then my little brother and me started playing basketball more. I started falling in love with the game and never stopped. My little brother and me have always been competitive. Ever since we were small, we'd be fighting each other and trying to win against each other. Even in video games. He couldn't beat me."
What adversity are you most proud of overcoming to get to this point in your journey?
"I feel like I've been facing adversity my whole life. That's where being a dog comes from, wanting to guard the other team's best player. It keeps me motivated. Being the last in line but staying low and keep fighting for everything."
Who is the first person you'd call for advice or to share something good?
"My pops, mom and little brother. I keep my circle tight with my family. Good and bad games. Family means the most to me. They're the ones who will be with me every day throughout my journey. They stayed with me and will always be with me."
What standard have you set for yourself in your work ethic?
"Never giving up. My mom didn't raise a quitter. Everything I'm going through, I'm going to do it 100 percent. I'm not a quitter."
What is something off the basketball court that people don't know about you?
"I'm locked into basketball right now. Really not a lot besides basketball."
What do you want to embrace the most about playing at Texas Tech?
"I'm extremely blessed for this opportunity. I'm around a lot of talented dudes every day and we're all trying to get better."
