Catcher Matt Quintanar homered and doubled in defeat
LUBBOCK, Texas – One night after a dramatic 2-1 win, Texas Tech dropped the middle game of its weekend series to BYU Friday night, falling 12-3 at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park.
In the setback, Texas Tech (25-25, 8-18) got a solo home run from catcher Matt Quintanar and a double from second baseman Tracer Lopez, as Tech saw its three-game losing streak snapped.
Lopez's double was his 20th of the season, and moved the infielder into solo fifth place on the all-time hits list. Most impressively, the 20-double season for Lopez comes after the infielder had just 21 total two-base hits in his previous three season.
On Friday night, Tech saw BYU (25-24, 13-13 Big 12) use the longball, to strike for two runs in the first inning, two in the second and one in the third to take a 5-0 lead to the bottom of the third.
Four of the Cougars five runs came on solo home runs, including a lead-off bomb from right fielder Bryker Hurdsman and a two-run blast from DH Matt Hasen. BYU hit five home runs on the night and scratched out 16 hits.
Hurdsman scored four times and homered twice in a 2-for-4 night, while Hansen also homered twice in a 3-for-4 day.
Down 5-0, the Red Raiders got the solo blast from Quintanar to pull to within 5-1, but BYU used three runs in the fourth to take an 8-1 lead.
After a 1-2-3 frame from reliever Logan Bevis in the fifth, Tech used a double from infielder Linkin Garcia and the run-scoring double from Quintanar to pull to within 8-2.
With Quintanar at second and two outs, SS Coleman Ryan singled up the middle, but BYUs Ryder Robinson was able to keep the ball on the infield as Quintanar was held at third.
The play proved to be big, as BYUs Garrison Sumner stranded Quintanar at third and Ryan at second with a 3-2 strikeout of Kyeler Thompson.
In the win, Sumner went seven innings of five-hit, three-run ball. The righty did not walk a batter and struck out eight.
Leading-off the sixth after his strong defensive play, Robinson walked and later came around to score on a three-run home run off the bat of Hansen. The blast gave BYU an 11-2 lead.
In their half of the sixth, the Red Raiders got the lead-off double from Lopez who later came around to score on an RBI ground out by Logan Hughes.
In an 11-3 game, Tech got nearly three one-hit scoreless innings from reliever Brady Trombello before the righty allowed a 450-foot two-out ninth inning home run to Hurdsman that gave BYU the 12-3 lead.
In the setback, Tech was limited to just six total baserunners (all hits) as the duo of Sumner and BYUs Justis Reiser struck out 10 and did not issue a free pass. Conversely the Red Raiders walked six.
