Tech rolls to bounce-back run-rule win over Tarleton
April 21, 2026 | Baseball
The Red Raiders got a home run from Logan Hughes and two doubles and four RBIs from Connor Shouse
Down 2-0 heading to the bottom of the second, Texas Tech (21-19) sent 11 batters to plate in the frame scoring six times to take a 6-2 lead.
The inning started well as Tech used a lead-off single from Linkin Garcia and a walk from Caden Ferraro to place the tying runs on base against Tarleton's (25-15) Carter Coffin.
Garica went 4-for-5 in the victory and drove in the game-clinching run in the victory.
After a popup put the inning's first out on the board, the Red Raiders used four-straight hits to hang the first six-run inning since the Apr. 4 win over Houston when the Red Raiders scored seven time to run-rule the Cougars.
The inning featured an RBI single from SS Coleman Ryan, a go-ahead two-run single from Kyeler Thompson and a bunt hit from Tracer Lopez that plated a run on a throwing error by Coffin.
Lopez, who was 2-for-3 with two walks, recorded his 219th and 220th career hits to move into solo ninth on the all-time hit list. Lopez now needs just one hit to catch Mike Humphreys for eighth on the hits list (221) and two knocks to tie Roger Kieschnick for seventh at 222.
The infielder is now 18 for his last 30 (.600) at the plate and is hitting .361 on the season. He also scored three times on Tuesday including the run-rule clinching run. Lopez with his three runs scored reached 160 career runs, as he pulled into a tie with Cody Fuller and Kevin Lowery for 10th in program history.
Armed with the lead for the first time, Texas Tech starter Kaysen Raineri worked around a two-out single to fire a shutdown inning.
Raineri, who took the ball for his third start of the season, went 4.0 innings and allowed just five hits and two runs (one earned) on a sun-lost triple and an error. Raineri whiffed five and did not walk a batter, landing 55 of his 80 pitches for strikes. He ran his season record to a perfect 4-0 and took over the team lead in wins.
After batting around in the second, the Red Raiders again sent 11 batters to the plate in the third, scoring five runs on an RBI single from Lopez, another two-run double from Shouse and a 377-foot two run home run from Hughes.
The homer for Hughes was the 30th of his career and came on the ninth pitch of a battle with Tarleton's Corbin Walter.
With the back-to-back five-run innings, the Red Raiders scored five times in back-to-back innings for the first time this season. Tech now has back-to-back innings of three runs or more
three times this season against Penn State (Mar. 7) and at UNM (Apr. 7).
Up 11-2, Raineri worked around a first and second one out jam, striking out back-to-back batters to hang the ever important zero.
The game remained 11-2 Tech until the top of the fifth when Tarleton scored a run on two singles, a hit-by-pitch and a two-out full-count walk. The free pass cut the Tech lead to 11-3.
With the Red Raiders just two runs from another run-rule win, they loaded the bases in the seventh with no outs on back-to-back walks and a bunt single from Shouse.
With the bases re-loaded and nobody out, Tech used a wild pitch to take a 12-3 lead.
Following a walk to Hughes that re-loaded the bases, Garcia ripped a 1-1 pitch into the right field corner for a walk-off single that snapped a five-game losing streak.
In the victory, the Red Raiders struck for 13 hits and walked 10 times, including three from Thompson and three from Hughes. The Red Raiders also got two walks apiece from Lopez and DH Caden Ferraro.
The win was Texas Tech's 21st of the season eclipsing the Red Raiders 2025-win total.
