New facility naming will be unveiled Friday in the series opener between Texas Tech and Iowa State
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech will rename its softball facility to Tracy Sellers Field on Friday evening when the No. 2 Red Raiders open a three-game Big 12 series against Iowa State. A formal recognition of the Sellers family will follow later this season.
"The Sellers family has forever transformed the trajectory of our softball program here at Texas Tech," Hocutt said. "Thanks to their generosity, the Red Raiders are annual contenders for not only Big 12 Conference championships but national titles. We're proud that our softball student-athletes will now compete on a field named after one of their own in Tracy Sellers thanks to the tremendous support she and her husband John have consistently provided to further elevate this athletics program." Â
Tracy Sellers, formerly Tracy Cartier during her time as a Red Raider softball student-athlete from 2001-03, and her husband, John, have been a driving force behind Texas Tech's rise in softball, contributing to both the Red Raider Club and Matador Club for Name-Image-Likeness (NIL) support as well as to significant capital projects such as the facility now in her name. Prior to this season, Texas Tech overhauled the facility with numerous upgrades, most notably a new awning and protective netting down both baselines thanks in part to philanthropic gifts from the Sellers family.
"This is a tremendous honor for our entire family," Tracy Sellers said. "I owe so much to my time as a softball student-athlete at Texas Tech. I truly believe it shaped who I am today, so I believe strongly in giving back to a program that gave me so much. I want to help provide the same experience for the tremendous student-athletes in our dugout as Coach Glasco and his staff continue to take this program to new heights."
John Sellers is a former Texas Tech student-athlete, himself, as a member of the football program under head coach Mike Leach. He is now the co-founder and co-chief executive officer of Double Eagle Holdings, one of the most successful oil and gas exploration and development companies in the country. Additionally, he was a co-founder of the Matador Club, which was formally the official NIL collective of the athletics department until integrating as part of the Red Raider Club last summer.
The Sellers family continues to support Texas Tech student-athletes through philanthropic giving to the Red Raider Club, ensuring Texas Tech stays at the forefront of building championship programs. For their commitment to Texas Tech Athletics, the Sellers family will be added to the Founders Society wall inside Jones AT&T Stadium later this summer, which recognizes longtime supporters who have made significant financial contributions to the advancement of the Double T.Â
"We can't wait to watch championship softball for years to come at Tracy Sellers Field," John Sellers said. "This is an incredible honor for Tracy and our entire family. We believe the value of being a student-athlete at Texas Tech is unmatched and can take you anywhere in life. We're proud to support women's athletics and namely our softball program as Coach Glasco and our student-athletes continue to elevate Texas Tech to an annual national contender."
Tracy Sellers Field opened in 2001 after Texas Tech reinstated its softball program in 1996 at the start of its tenure in the Big 12 Conference. The facility was originally named Rocky Johnson Field in honor of James L. "Rocky" Johnson, a former chairman of the Texas Tech University System Board of Regents and a distinguished alumnus of the Rawls College of Business. In the coming months, Texas Tech will add signage to the facility to honor the history of the stadium and Johnson's contributions to the athletics department.
The facility renaming has already been approved by the Texas Tech Board of Regents. First pitch between Texas Tech and Iowa State is slated for 6 p.m. this evening to start a three-game weekend series at Tracy Sellers Field.
