The Red Raiders take sole possession of first place in the Big 12
LUBBOCK, Texas – No. 11 Texas Tech (12-1-4, 8-1-1) took town No. 8 Baylor (14-3-1, 7-2-1) 1-0 on Friday night at John Walker Soccer Complex thanks to sophomore Gianna Gregoire's first career goal and Addie Todd's 10th shutout of the season.
The first half ended scoreless with both teams battling the slick pitch due to the rain. Tech had six corner kicks to Baylor's one. Both teams had eight shots with Baylor's keeper Azul Alvarez making two saves. Tech had four corner kicks in the first 10 minutes of the second half to put them at 10 on the match, the most in a Big 12 contest this season, and would end the match with 11.
Baylor got called for a penalty in the box on an attacking Taylor Zdrojewski that was reversed by VAR after it was determined that Zdrojewski contacted the ground first which caused her to fall forward. A few minutes later Tech had back-to-back great looks at the goal after a great pass from Abbi Sine to Zdrojewski in transition was saved with a few seconds later Bahr missing a shot just right of the net after finessing her way into position.
Gregoire's first career goal came in the 77th minute of the match as she poked her way down the left post goal line and delivered a strike over the diving goalie into the right-side pocket of the goal to a thunderous eruption from the Red Raider faithful.
The Bears had just three shots on goal, the second lowest for a Big 12 match this season, as Tech's defense swarmed them and played aggressively as they do so well. With the win, Tech now has five top 10 wins in its program's history, four under Tom Stone, and it was the squads first since 2015 when they defeated No. 2 West Virginia.
