The Red Raiders will look to improve to a perfect 8-0-0 when following a loss since 2022
LUBBOCK, Texas โ After sufferingย its first loss of the season last Friday, No. 14/15 Texas Tech seeks to bounce back Thursday night when No. 16/16 WVU pays its first visit to the John Walker Soccer Complex since the 2022 season.
After falling from the ranks of the unbeaten last Friday night at No. 22 BYU, Tech seeks its 10th overall win of the season and looks to keep pace atop the crowded Big 12 table, as Tech enters Thursday's contest in a four-way tie with Baylor, Kansas and BYU. The Red Raiders sit three points clear of the nationally ranked Mountaineers who enter the contest with 13 total points.
Baylor heads west for a battle at Arizona State, while BYU and Kansas are set to do battle in Lawrence on Thursday night in a clash between the other two teams tied atop the Big 12 standings.
One of the best "bounce back" teams in the country, the Red Raiders enter Thursday having won seven-straight games following a loss since a 2022 tie to Oklahoma State. That seven-match winning streak includes wins over Kansas State (Oct. 26, 2025), SMU (Aug. 28, 2025), LSU in the NCAA Tournament (Nov. 15, 2024), Baylor (Nov. 2, 2024), Weber State (Aug. 29, 2024), CSUN (Aug. 18, 2024) and FGCU (Nov. 10, 2023).
Over that seven-game span the Red Raiders have allowed just three total goals and have outscored the listed opponents 18-3. The Red Raiders last lost back-to-back matches (in the same season) in 2021 against Texas (Oct. 3) and Baylor (Sept. 30). Tech is also 18-1-1 in its last 20 games when following a draw or loss since the 2023 NCAA Round of 16 setback to UNC.
As part of Thursday's festivities, the Red Raiders will also be giving away the 2026 scarf presented by Tech Athletics and the Red Raider Club. ย ย
INSIDE THE MATCHUP:
MATCHUP: No. 14/15 Texas Tech (9-1-4, 5-1-1 Big 12) vs. No. 16/16 West Virginia (9-2-2, 4-2-1 Big 12)
DATE: Thursday, Oct. 22, 2026
TIME: 7 p.m.
LOCATION: Lubbock, Texas (John Walker Soccer Complex)
BY THE NUMBERS:
54: One of the best and most consistent programs in the country the last four seasons, Tech enters the 10th week of the 2026 season sitting at 54-10-16 (.775) over the programs last 77 matches (since the start of the 2023 season). Only three schools nationally have more wins than Tech over that span: Stanford (64), Florida State (59), North Carolina (56). Tech leads the Big 12 over that span.
ย
33: Over the past four conference seasons (2022-26), Tech leads the Big 12 Conference in total wins (33), notching four more wins than third-place WVU (29) and three more than TCU (30). The Red Raiders are 33-4-11 (.802) in Big 12 play over that span (48ย matches) and are the only team in the Big 12 with three straight seven-plus win seasons. Tech's four losses in league play are also the fewest in the league, eightย clear of TCUs 12 losses. Only one school in the country has more wins: Michigan State (35).
ย
54: ย While putting the ball in the back of the net is the name of the game, scoring twice has been critical for the Red Raiders success as since the start of the 2022 season, the Red Raiders are now 54-1-2 when scoring two goals. When you expand that mark out to the beginning of the 2021 season, Tech is 63-3-2 when scoring twice in a match. Friday's loss at BYU snapped a 56-game unbeaten streak when scoring twice that dated back to a 2021 3-2 loss at Baylor (Sept. 3).
ย
LAST TIME OUT:
Taylor Zdrojewski scored twice, but it was not enough, as No. 8 Texas Tech fell from the ranks of the unbeaten, falling 3-2 to No. 22 BYU at South Field.
The loss snaps a 56-match unbeaten streak (54-0-2) for Texas Tech (9-1-4, 5-1-1 Big 12) when scoring twice in a match as well as the Red Raiders 18-match unbeaten streak (11-0-7). Tech also fell for the first time in 31 matches (previously 24-0-7) when finding the back of the net.
Up 1-0 early, the Red Raiders also saw a 287 minute and eight second scoreless streak snapped, as Tech conceded three times for the first time since Oct. 22, 2025, a 3-0 loss to then No. 22/8 Colorado.
On top after Zdrojewski picked the pocket of BYUsย (9-3-2, 5-1-1 Big 12) goalkeeper Paiton Collins to put her side up a goal, the Red Raiders nearly went ahead 2-0 twice on a pair of Zdrojewski shots that sailed over the bar and was saved by Collins.
Still down just one, BYU (9-3-2, 5-1-1 Big 12) equalized in the waning moments of the 17th minute on a strong run from Emma Hamerbline followed by a perfect cross sailed to the far post that was buried by Mia Goettsche.
Just one minute and seven seconds until halftime, Tech allowed a second goal when a header in the middle of the six-yard box was headed home by Mattyn Summers-Oviatt. Like Zdrojewski, Summers-Oviatt recorded a brace for the victorious Cougars.
Following the break, Tech nearly found its ever important second goal when a strong run from Kylie Bahr resulted in a rocketed far post shot that was punched wide by Collins.
Three and a half minutes later BYU struck for a third time when Summer-Oviatt slipped through the Red Raider backline and ripped a shot past a diving Addie Todd.
Down by a pair of goals for the first time since the aforementioned Colorado defeat, the Red Raiders scored with just under 20 minutes left when a Raliegh Greason shot-rebound was buried by Zdrojewski.
The ball which was deemed to have crossed the line stood up upon a VAR review.
To within a goal for the first time in nearly 30 minutes, Tech was buzzing late but a pair of blocked shots helped the Cougars close out the home victory. The first shot came from Bahr who
ripped one from 25 that deflected off a BYU defender before being scooped up by Collins, while the final shot was a Hays screamer off a hand-ball free-kick that was also blocked by the Cougar backline.

That mark is two better than five different players including Clark and Sophia Nickle of WVU who have four goals in league play. Zdrojewski's 84 career points are the 10th-most amongst active players.
