Tech returns home, welcomes SMU Thursday
August 26, 2025 | Women's Soccer
The Red Raiders and Mustangs will meet for the first time since 2007
LUBBOCK, Texas – Looking to bounce back after a disappointing 2-0 setback at San Francisco Sunday afternoon, Texas Tech Soccer returns home to face in-state rival SMU Thursday night for the annual "Code Red" match at the John Walker Soccer Complex.
All fans attending Thursday's match are encouraged to wear their best red/scarlet Tech apparel.
The match will be Gen-Z night, and will feature a "Red Raiders" branded phone wallet giveaway as well as a raffle for all Texas Tech students wearing red. The raffle items will include a Texas Tech adidas backpack, an Owala water bottle, a lego set and an iPad.
Thursday's matchup between Tech and SMU, will be the first between the in-state foes in nearly two decades (6555 days) as Tech and SMU last met during the 2007 season. That matchup in Dallas ended in a scoreless draw.
Again, seeking a bounce back performance back at Ft. Walker for the first time since Aug. 17, the Red Raiders will look to continue a streak of finding a way to win following a setback, as the Red Raiders have won five-straight matches overall following a loss and are 17-2-5 since 2018 in the next match following a setback.
The home match between the Red Raiders and Mustangs will also close the opening month of the season (August) for Tech, as the Red Raiders will not play again until one week from Thursday night (Sept. 4) against New Mexico State in Las Cruces.
INSIDE THE MATCHUP:
MATCHUP: Texas Tech (3-1-0) vs. SMU (3-1-0)
DATE: Thursday, Aug. 28, 2025
TIME: 7 p.m.
LOCATION: Lubbock, Texas (John Walker Soccer Complex)
BY THE NUMBERS:
.605: In his 19 seasons as head coach of the Red Raiders, head coach Tom Stone has recorded a .605 winning percentage following a loss (46-28-12). After going just 16-16-4 in his first five seasons following a loss, Stone is now 30-12-8 (.680) when following a setback since the 2012 season and is 17-2-6 (.800) since 2018 when following a loss. The Red Raiders are 27-3-4 (.853) all-time when following a loss in non-conference play under Stone.
2: While putting the ball in the back of the net is the name of the game, scoring twice has been critical for the Red Raiders success as since the start of the 2022 season, the Red Raiders are now 37-0-1 (lone tie at No. 7 BYU in 2023) when scoring two goals. When you expand that mark out to the beginning of the 2021 season, Tech is 46-2-1 when scoring twice in a match.
+50: The Red Raiders enter Thursday's match riding a 13-match home non-conference winning streak dating back to an Aug. 25, 2022, 1-1 draw against New Mexico. In the 13-home match non-conference unbeaten streak, the Red Raiders have outscored opponents 54-4.
QUICK KICKS:
• Looking to bounce back after a tough 2-0 setback last Sunday afternoon at San Francisco, Texas Tech Soccer returns home to the friendly confines of the John Walker Soccer Complex, where since the installation of the grass surface the Red Raiders are 21-2-2 in their last 25 home matches and are 19-1-1 in their last 21 home contests.
• After finding the back of the net 10 times in the first three matches of the season against San Diego State, Youngstown State and Santa Clara, the Red Raiders were shutout on Sunday afternoon for the first time in the regular season since a 0-0, Sept. 12 draw against TCU.
• The shutout Sunday marked the first time in 13 regular season matches that the Red Raiders were held scoreless. Boasting one of the nation's best attacks since the start of the 2023 season, the Red Raiders were blanked on Sunday for just the fourth time in the last three regular seasons and for just the seventh time (includes postseason) in their last 59 matches.
• The Red Raiders have "won" just once in those seven matches, the 0-0 PK "Victory" (counts as a draw) over Princeton in the Round of 32 in the 2023 NCAA Tournament.
• When you expand it out the Red Raiders are 54-3-11 the last 68 matches when scoring at least one goal. That streak dates back to the 2021 season and includes all Big 12 Tournament and postseason matches.
• After recording 30 total shots on goal in their first three matches and 71 total shots, the normally dangerous Tech attack was limited to just 12 total shots and three shots on goal. On Sunday, Tech recorded  just two total shots and no shots on goal in the first half, before the Red Raiders exploded for 10 shots after the break with all three shots on goal occurring in the final 15 minutes of the match.
• On the defensive end of things senior goalkeeper Faith Nguyen allowed multiple goals for just the fifth time as a Red Raider (Penn State, BYU, Kansas, Duke and USF) as Tech allowed multiple goals for just the fifth time since Sept. 25, 2022.
• That encompasses the final eight contests of the 2022 season, the 23 contests in the 2023 season and the 22 games a season ago, meaning the Red Raiders have allowed multiple goals just five times in their 63 matches.
• Heading into Thursday's in-state clash with SMU, the Red Raiders have won 13-straight home non-conference contests dating back to a 2022 (Aug. 25) 1-1 draw against UNM. Over that 13-match home winning streak the Red Raiders have outscored opponents 54-4 and have recorded nine clean sheets in those 13 contests.
UP NEXT:
The Red Raiders wont return to action until next Thursday night (Sept. 4) when the Red Raiders travel west to face New Mexico State in Las Cruces. First touch is set for 8 p.m. (CT)/7 p.m. (MT).
