No. 18 Tech blanked by San Francisco, 2-0
August 24, 2025 | Women's Soccer
The Red Raiders were shutout for the first time since the NCAA Tournament loss to No. 1 Duke
SAN FRANCISCO – No. 18 Texas Tech Soccer was held without a shot for the first nearly 80 minutes of action, before ultimately falling 2-0 at San Francisco Sunday afternoon at Negoesco Stadium.
Trailing for the first time in 2025, Texas Tech (3-1-0) saw its normally dynamic offense severely limited as the Red Raiders recorded just three total shots on goal in the setback.
After a shot from San Francisco's (1-2-0) Kaitlyn Sasadeusz found the back of the net in the 28th minute, the Red Raiders looked to have found the equalizer in the 40th minute when Eleanor Hays buried a free kick service from Macy Blackburn, but the play was ruled offsides and was upheld on VAR.
In the second half, the Red Raiders continued to press forward in search of a goal but ultimately were unable to convert.
After a foul just outside the 18-yard box gave Tech a free kick opportunity in the 61st minute, sophomore Sam Courtwright saw her low shot blocked away by the USF wall.
In the 78th minute after a handball gave Tech a free kick from 40 yards out, a skipping ball in the box fell to center back Molly Skurcenski but her right-footed shot was saved by USFs Tyra Bengtsson-Stenseth.
Not even 90 seconds after the free kick was turned aside, USF found the ever-important second goal when a long ball from Sydney Harpster fell to Sasadeusz who ripped a shot off the right post and into the bottom side of the net to complete her brace. Â
In the 85th minute, senior Peyton Parsons ripped a rising shot with her left foot towards the top-corner of the net that Bengtsson-Stenseth made a highlight reel save on to keep the Red Raiders from scoring. Â The chance by Parsons was the final for either side, as the match ended 2-0 in favor of the Dons.
With the set back the Red Raiders saw a six-match road winning streak snapped that dated back to a Sept. 12, 2024 draw at TCU and a seven-match road unbeaten streak (6-0-1) that stretched back to a 2-0 loss at Utah State last Aug. 25.
HEAD COACH TOM STONE:
"First you have to give San Francisco credit for how hard they played. They were all in it today. They were willing to foul and willing to contest. They won the vast majority of the balls in the air which is not something we find very often. We usually don't get 'out-dueled' in the air. They played good defense and really did not hurt themselves at all. When that is combined with one of the worst performances I can remember from a Tech team in a while, it was a recipe for disaster, and disaster struck. Their first goal doesn't go really ever on Faith or our team, and we found ourselves in a hole, 1-0. And then of course we were trying to equalize so we had two in the back and were sending everyone forward late. The second goal really didn't bother us because we were willing to risk that to try and tie it. And given the way we played and how well San Francisco played, had we equalized we would have been happy getting out of here with a draw. But it wasn't to be. They deserve credit for getting the win, but that was pretty disappointing from our standpoint."
On what the team learned from the double-road weekend:
"We'll see what we learned from this weekend. Maybe it's a team that needs to learn you don't come on the road [for two matches] for one game because the one had a marquee value on Thursday. It was a big game across the country, and you can't take your foot off the gas. Â Maybe that's part of it. The other is when you play teams that have a plan to frustrate you, you have to deal with that as well. Santa Clara had a plan to beat us and that made the game more winnable for either team. Today was a good game plan by them to make the game frustrating. That's where their coaching staff deserves credit. We certainly could have done more to counter that and it didn't happen, and we're going to have to take our lumps. The other thing to recognize when you have two games on the weekend sometimes the Sunday game is harder regardless of the opponent. People are fatigued and we put a lot into Thursday's game obviously, and sometimes it's harder. We went deeper into the bench today and I thought some of those players came off the bench and did really well, but overall, our top performers did not have their best day and it's rare to see that happen across the lineup. Today was one of those days where we could never get anything going."
