LUBBOCK, Texas – Behind strong days from Robin Villeneuve, Damian Bravo and Logan Hughes, Texas Tech Baseball closed its 2025 home slate with a 16-4 run-rule (8) win over Abilene Christian Tuesday afternoon at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park.
On a hot and windy day in Lubbock, Texas Tech (19-30) exploded for five home runs including three from Villeneuve who became the first Red Raider since Kevin Bazzell in 2023 (Kansas; May 19) to launch three homers in a game. The Canadian first baseman drove in seven and scored three times.
The Red Raiders also added eight stolen bases including three from Bravo who now has 16 total stolen bases on the season.
With the win, the Red Raiders have now won seven-straight matchups against ACU (29-20).
After launching a three-run home run in the first inning, Villeneuve followed with homers in the fifth and eighth to close the three-homer day. The longball in the eighth, was a "walk-off" home run that closed the Red Raiders first run-rule victory since a 21-3 victory over ACU in 2024 (April 10).
Following a quick four-pitch 1-2-3 inning from starter Connor Mohan in the first inning, Tech jumped all over all ACU "starter" Noah Galvan, using a RBI two-out double from Bravo and the first three-run blast from Villeneuve to race out to a 2-0 lead.
In the top of the second, ACU answered with its first of two homers on the afternoon when first baseman Grant Watkins hit a two-run home run to cut the Tech lead to 4-2.
After a scoreless inning in the second from reliever Brady Coe, ACU placed the tying runs in scoring position with two outs in the third. With Watkins strolling to the plate, the Red Raiders turned to senior Trendan Parish who won a seven-pitch battle with Watkins to strand the runners.
Mohan in his sixth-straight midweek start went 2.2 innings and allowed four hits and two runs. The righty tossed 44 pitches, did not walk a batter and struck out two.
Following a lead-off walk and a stolen base from Hughes put a runner in scoring position with no outs, Bravo singled home his outfield mate on the next offering he saw from Tech transfer Nolan Foster. The single gave Tech a 5-2 lead.
The Red Raiders ultimately made it 6-2 when third baseman Peyton Schulze scored Bravo on a sac-fly.
Following a scoreless top of the fourth from Parish, the Red Raiders struck for three more runs on a lead-off triple from freshman Coleman Ryan and back-to-back errors from ACU reliever Andrew Guardino. The first was a kicked bunt attempt from Tracer Lopez and the second was an errant pick-off toss at first base that scored Ryan from third.
The Red Raiders ultimately plated their eighth and ninth runs of the contest two batters later when Logan Hughes hit his team-leading 18th home run of the season. Coming into the contest tied for 10th all-time on the single-season home run list, Hughes closed the day tied with Cameron Warren (2019), Clint Bryant (1988) and Mike Humphreys (1988) for seventh on the list.
On base three more times, Hughes raised his average to .326 for the season and also extended his on-base streak to 35-straight contests.
After ACU homered off Parish for the lone run he would allow in two innings of work to cut the Tech lead to 9-3, the Red Raiders used a 368-foot blast from Villeneuve in the bottom of the fifth to take a 10-3 lead. Parish earned his first victory of the season on Tuesday afternoon.
The game remained 10-3 until the seventh when Tech answered ACUs fourth and final run of the contest with a lead-off home run from Bravo. The blast was his 11th of the season.
After a scoreless eighth from junior Jacob Rogers, the Red Raiders used a sac-fly from Hughes, another RBI single from Bravo and the three-run homer from Villeneuve to close out the run-rule victory.
