Tech falls at UNM, 15-5

The Red Raiders could not overcome a seven inning bottom of the first
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Texas Tech Baseball could not overcome an early 7-0 deficit in a 15-5 (8) run-rule setback Tuesday afternoon to New Mexico at Santa Anna Star Field.
After going down in order in the top of the first, Texas Tech (9-20) saw New Mexico (17-15) use back-to-back home runs and a two-RBI double to take a 7-0 lead.
The second home run followed by a single to left spelled the end of the day for freshman Connor Mohan.
Entering in the bottom of the first, junior Zach Erdman settled the game down, as the lefty tossed three innings including a pair of scoreless innings in the second and third.
Down 7-0 heading to the fourth, the Red Raiders used a one-out double from Logan Hughes and an RBI single by Robin Villeneuve to get on the board.
Tech's next batter, Antonelli Savattere singled, but a pop-up and a grounder to first ended the frame.
In the bottom of the fourth, UNM used a lead-off home run by lead-off hitter Tye Wood to take an 8-1 lead. Wood went 3-for-3 with three walks, three RBIs and four runs scored.
The Red Raiders used a double and single from Coleman Ryan and Tracer Lopez to bring Damian Bravo to the plate. On an 0-2 count, Bravo ripped a low line drive that Wood was able to pick off with a slide. On the play, the Red Raiders to plate Ryan from third to pull to within 5-2.
After a scoreless fifth and sixth inning, the Red Raiders plated their third run of the afternoon on an RBI single by Lopez.
With Bravo strolling to plate, the Red Raiders nearly trimmed the UNM lead further, but a 406-foot flyout to dead center off the bat of Bravo and another well-struck ball to center ended the the seventh.
In an 8-3 game, UNM used a four-run seventh and three runs in the eighth to close out a 15-5 victory.

The Red Raiders return to Rip Griffin Park this weekend for a three-game series against Baylor. First pitch Friday is set for 6:30 p.m.
