The Red Raiders scored four times in both the seventh and eighth in the victory
LUBBOCK, Texas – Mac Heuer and Jack Cebert limited Baylor to just two runs over the first eight innings of play, allowing the Texas Tech bats to strike for back-to-back four run frames in the Red Raiders 9-2 Friday night win over Baylor at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park.
Heuer tied his career-high in innings pitched on Friday, as the right-hander allowed just two runs and five hits over his 108-pitch outing.
Down 2-1 at the seventh inning stretch, Texas Tech (10-20, 6-7) used key hits up-and-down the lineup to score eight unanswered runs and close out their first Friday night win in Big 12 play since the opening series at Houston.
After a 1-2-3 top of the first from Heuer, the Red Raiders nearly struck first off Baylor (21-12, 5-8 Big 12) lefty Ethan Calder but a grounder to third base got the southpaw through the frame unscathed.
In the top of the second, Baylor used four straight hits to take a 2-0 lead and place runners on the corners with nobody out.
Baylor's next batter, Jack Little, on a 1-2 count swung and missed. With Ty Johnson breaking from first, Little was called for interference to put two outs on the board. Â
Heuer ultimately got through the inning with no further damage, when he won a seven-pitch battle with BU catcher JJ Kennet.
Down by just two after avoiding a crooked number, the Red Raiders again loaded the bases off Calder in the second, this time on back-to-back singles from Garret Boehm and Kendyl Johnson.
After a sac-bunt from SS Coleman Ryan placed the tying run in scoring position, the Red Raiders used a walk from Lopez to load the bases for Damian Bravo who drove in his 30th run of the season on a line drive rocket to right.
With two outs and runners on the corners, Calder kept Baylor in front 2-1 with a strikeout.
Following a shutdown 1-2-3 inning from Heuer in the third, the Red Raiders nearly tied it when first baseman Robin Villeneuve ripped a 105 MPH line drive in the gap. Destined for the right-center field wall, the ball was instead knocked down by the wind for a long first out.
After a pair of strong innings from Heuer and Calder in the fourth, Baylor got a lead-off double from Little in the fifth, but Heuer used three-straight strikeouts to strand the first baseman in scoring position.
In the home half of the fifth, it was the Red Raiders who nearly scored, when back-to-back two-out singles from Villeneuve and Antonelli Savattere placed a pair on base. Ahead in the count 1-0, catcher Dylan Maxcey ripped a ball into the gap that was ran down by Johnson for the final out of the frame.
With his pitch count over 100 for the first time this season, Heuer overcame a two-out walk when Maxcey gunned down Baylor's Pearson Riebock at second base on his 108th and final pitch of the night.
Turning to Cebert for the seventh, the Red Raider righty worked around a one-out double to fire a zero that kept the game, 2-1.
Up by a run, Baylor turned to its stud reliever, Will Glatch.
Sporting a 0.92 ERA, the Red Raiders lit up Glatch for four runs (one earned) when a lead-off single by Lopez on a 3-1 count, an E5 and a four-pitch walk loaded the bases with nobody out.
After a Villeneuve strikeout put the first out on the board, the Red Raiders used a five-pitch walk from Savattere to tie the game at two.
With the bases still loaded, the Red Raiders next batter, Maxcey, legged out a ground ball for an infield single. After fielding the ball, Riebock uncorked an errant throw that scored a second run and gave Tech a 4-2 lead.
One batter later, an RBI ground out from Boehm scored the innings fourth run and gave Tech a 5-2 lead.
Armed with the lead for the first time, Cebert recorded the Red Raiders second of three shutdown innings in the eighth to keep the Red Raiders on top 5-2.
In the bottom of the eighth, the Red Raiders again struck for four runs, this time using three RBI singles from Logan Hughes, Villeneuve and Maxcey to take an 8-2 lead.
Another RBI knock, this time a double from Boehm, put the exclamation point on the Red Raiders eighth and final unanswered run of the night.
In the ninth, Cebert and reliever Trendan Parish slammed the door on the Red Raiders 9-2 victory.
