The Red Raiders and Wildcats will play for the series Sunday afternoon
LUBBOCK, Texas – 10-unanswered runs capped by a Robin Villeneuve home run powered Texas Tech Baseball to a convincing 12-3 win that gave the Red Raiders a doubleheader split against No. 16 Arizona Saturday afternoon at Rip Griffin Park.
After last night's series opener was postponed due to lightning, the Red Raiders (14-24, 9-11 Big 12) bats came alive late in game one to give Tech its first ranked win of the season.
In the nightcap, the Red Raiders used another home run from Villeneuve to take a 1-0 lead, before Arizona (29-12, 13-7 Big 12) used a two-run sixth to win a tight 2-1 affair. The one run loss was Tech's seventh of the season, as the Red Raiders fell to 2-7 in one run games.
The Red Raiders got excellent pitching on the afternoon as five Tech pitchers combined to hold an Arizona offense averaging nearly eight runs per game to just five total runs and four earned runs. The Red Raider pitchers allowed just 12 hits on Saturday.
GAME ONE:
Mac Heuer and Jack Cebert did a lot of the heavy lifting in the first game, as Heuer allowed just three runs (two earned) in six innings of work to earn his second win of the season, while Cebert pitched two more scoreless innings.
After Heuer worked around a one-out single from Arizona's Aaron Walton, the Red Raiders immediately struck for a run when Tracer Lopez worked a nine-pitch lead-off walk, stole second and advanced to third on an error.
Lopez eventually come around to score on a one-out single from Damian Bravo.
Armed with a 1-0 lead, Heuer needed just nine pitches to retire the side in order in the second, bringing the Tech bats back to the plate.
Arizona's Collin McKinney retired the first two Red Raiders, but a 10-pitch walk by Coleman Ryan and a two-out double from Lopez gave the Red Raiders a 2-0 lead.
A lead-off single from Arizona's Tommy Splaine and a fielding error set the table for Arizona's lead-off man Brendan Summerhill. Ahead in the count 3-1, Summerhill doubled home a pair, tying the game at two.
The Preseason All-Big 12 selection came around to score three pitches later on a sac-fly from Walton.
Down for the first time all day, Tech chased McKinney from the ball game after just 2.2 innings as Arizona turned to righty Casey Hintz.
Hintz was dominate early, retiring the first six batters he faced. The streak was ultimately snapped by a Logan Hughes first pitch home run that tied the game at three. The longball for Hughes was his team-leading 12th of the season. Entering the day, the 12 homers would have tied Hughes for fourth in the Big 12.
After the homer from Hughes tied the game, the Red Raiders got four-straight two-out hits to take a 6-3 lead. The first two-out RBI hit was a double from Davis Rivers while the final hit was a two-run single by Peyton Schulze. In his third straight start, Schulze went 2-for-4 with the two-run single.
Back on top for the first time since the third, Heuer needed just three pitches to retire the first two outs of the sixth, before running into a little jam when Arizona used a full-count single and a five-pitch walk to bring the tying run to the plate.
Behind in the count 3-1, and on his 94th pitch of the afternoon, Heuer coaxed a foul out to escape the jam.
In the bottom of the sixth, Tech got another double from Lopez and a two-out RBI single from Bravo to take a 7-2 lead.
Designated hitter Antonelli Savattere quickly made it 8-2 Tech when he plated Bravo from second. Savattere ultimately scored on a two-run home run from Villeneuve one batter later.
In the seventh, Tech turned to Cebert who needed just six pitches to coax three grounders in another 1-2-3 frame.
Back to the plate, the Red Raiders used a lead-off double from Schulze and two groundouts, the final from Lopez, to take an 11-3 lead.
On the bump again for the eighth, Cebert used two more grounders and a line-out to right to record his second scoreless inning. With his two-shutout innings on Saturday afternoon, Cebert lowered his overall ERA to 2.97 and his Big 12-only ERA to 1.52.
Tech used a walk from Hughes, a hit-by-pitch from Bravo and another RBI single from Savattere to take a 12-3 lead to the ninth.
In the ninth, junior JT Drake did not allow a run, closing out the Red Raiders third-straight win and first ranked win of the season.
GAME TWO:
Junior Tyler Boudreau took the ball and got off to an electric start for the Red Raiders, as the righty turned in an immaculate inning, striking out the Wildcat side on just nine pitches.
In the bottom half of the first, the Red Raiders used a one-out single from Kyeler Thompson and a two-out single from Bravo to place runners on first and second and two outs for Savattere.
Like he did in the series opener, Savattere put a good swing on the ball, but his grounder up the middle was snared by Arizona's Mason White, who stepped on the second base bag for the third and final out of the frame.
Boudreau retired the first two UofA batters in the second, before back-to-back walks placed a pair on base with two outs. Looking to end the threat, Boudreau used his fifth strikeout of the afternoon to strand both runners and send the game to the bottom of the second.
In the second, Tech used a lead-off home run from Villeneuve to take a 1-0 lead.
Following another scoreless inning in the third that featured Arizona's first hit of the ball game, Tech nearly extended its lead, but Arizona's Own Kramkowski stranded back-to-back no-out singles from Lopez and Thompson to escape the inning down just 1-0.
Despite allowing eight hits and lots of loud contact, Kramkowski pitched seven innings of one-run ball in the nightcap to earn his seventh win of the season. The victory ties the righty for the Big 12 lead in victories.
The first-and-second no out threat for the Red Raiders proved to be the final scoring chance Tech would have until the home-half of the sixth, where down 2-1, the Red Raiders got back-to-back two-out singles from Villeneuve and Rivers before Kramkowski retired Schulze on a flyout to right.
Kramkowski's shutdown inning proved to be massive as it came after Arizona tied the game at one on a lead-off home run from Walton and took the lead for good on a go-ahead RBI single from Garen Caufield. Tech's Trendan Parish was helped out in the frame by a gorgeous outfield assist from Thompson.
The single form Caufield chased Boudreau from the game as the righty went 5.1 innings and allowed just two runs and four hits. The Alberta native walked two and struck out a Big 12 career-high eight batters earning the tough-luck loss.
In relief of Boudreau the Red Raiders got 3.2 shutout innings from Parish who after allowing 22 earned runs (at least two earned in each appearance) in his first six appearances has combined to allow just one total run in his last four appearances (9.1 total innings).
After finally chasing Kramkowski from the contest, the Red Raiders got a lead-off single from Hughes in the eighth to place the tying run on for Bravo. With the outfielder ahead in the count 2-0, Hughes broke for second and initially beat the throw, before the momentum of his slide took him off the base. Hughes was ultimately tagged out for the first out of the inning.
The caught stealing erased Tech's final base runner of the game, as Arizona's Tony Pluta earned his Big 12 leading ninth save of the season tossing two shutout innings.
After scoring 13 times and recording eight two-out RBIs in the first game, the Red Raiders were limited to just one total run for the first time since a 5-1 opening day loss to then No. 6 UNC. Â
