Late Rally comes up short, as Tech falls 11-10 to UCSD

The Red Raiders scored six runs in the final two innings before coming up one run short
LUBBOCK, Texas – Despite a pair of first career home runs as Red Raiders for both Robin Villeneuve and Antonelli Savaterre, as well as 3.1 shutout innings and a career-high seven punchouts from Will Jordan, Texas Tech Baseball fell 11-10 Tuesday night to UC San Diego at windy Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park.
With the winds gusting up to 70 MPH for a large portion of the day, Texas Tech (2-8) nearly overcame an early eight-run deficit, as the Red Raiders three times pulled to with a run before falling for the third straight contest and fourth time in five games.
In the setback, three different Red Raiders recorded multiple hits and four different Red Raiders homered.
In addition to Savaterre and Villeneuve recording their first home runs as Red Raiders, Tech also got the first home run of the season from designated hitter Davis Rivers who also doubled in the game.
After UCSD (8-4) struck first for two runs in the top of the second off Tech starter Jonny Lowe, the Red Raiders used a lead-off hit by pitch, a passed ball and two productive outs to cut the Tritons lead to 2-1.
The final productive out was a sac-fly off the bat of Dylan Maxcey. Maxcey went 2-for-2 on Tuesday night with a double, an RBI and two walks. Maxcey also threw out a runner trying to steal.
In his first career start as a Red Raider, Lowe allowed six hits and five runs in three innings of work.
With the score 2-1, UCSD used a two-run single from Parker Hackworth in the third and a three-run home run from Gabe Camacho in the fourth to take a commanding 9-1 lead.
Looking to scratch back into the game, the Red Raiders used a lead-off double from Villeneuve and a one-out single from Maxcey to place runners on the corners and one out for Rivers.
On the second pitch he saw from UCSDs Jake Villar, Rivers split the outfielders in left-center for a ground-rule double that plated Villeneuve from second and advanced Maxcey to third. The double hopping off the wall was a bad break for the Red Raiders as Maxcey was forced to hold at third base instead of being able to try and score.
After a four pitch walk to third baseman Peyton Schulze loaded the bases with one out, shortstop Tracer Lopez ripped a ball that looked to be headed for center field, but on its way back up the middle the ball caught a piece of the mound. The clip of the mound slowed the ball down turning what should have been a one-out two-run single into a 6-4-3 double play.
The twin killing kept UCSD in front 9-2.
After Jordan struck out the side in the top of the fifth, Savattere's towering two-run home run to right pulled the Red Raiders to within 9-4.
Following two more strikeouts from Jordan in a 1-2-3 sixth, the Red Raiders used a pair of walks to place runners on first and second with two outs, but a hard-hit ground ball off the bat of Kyeler Thompson found the glove of Camacho who beat Thompson to the bag for the third and final out of the frame.
Jordan went a career-best 3.1 innings on Tuesday night and scattered just two hits. The righty did not walk a batter and struck out a career-high seven.
After the teams traded zeros in the seventh, UCSDs Noah Lazuka homered off freshman Connor Mohan to give the Tritons a 10-4 lead.
Needing to rally to have a chance to win the game, Tech used a lead-off home run from outfielder Logan Hughes, a walk by Maxcey, and the 108 MPH home run from Rivers to pull to within 10-7. The home run was Hughes third of the season and his team-leading 11th RBI of the season.
Following an error and a strike out, the Red Raiders lead-off hitter, Thompson, split the gap in left-center for his first triple of the season. The three-bagger scored Schulze from first and brought Tech to within 10-8.
The next batter, outfielder Damian Bravo, plated Thompson from third on a sac-fly.
Once again within a run, Tech allowed a lead-off home run to Michael Crossland that increased the deficit to 11-9 but was able to use a pair of groundouts and a fly out to keep the game within two runs.
Batting as the lead-off man, Villeuenve took the fourth pitch he saw from reliever Steele Murdock 399 feet to right-center for his first home run as a Red Raider. The blast brought Tech to within a run at 11-10.
After Murdock coaxed a flyout from Hughes, Maxcey won nine-pitch battle with the UCSD righty when he ripped a 100 MPH liner down the third past line for a double.
With the tying run at second and one out, UCSD used a liner to center to put the second out of the inning on the board. After a wild pitch advanced Maxcey to third, Murdock won a 2-2 battle with Schulze, elevating a pitch past the infielders bat for strike three that sealed the win for the visitors.
UP NEXT:
The Red Raiders will look to split the midweek series with UCSD with a win on Wednesday afternoon, as righty Tyler Boudreau will take the ball for the 2 p.m. contest.
