Lady Raiders open Big 12 Championship against Kansas

LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech Lady Raiders head to Kansas City for the Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship as the 14-seed. The Lady Raiders will face the 11-seeded Kansas Jayhawks on Wednesday at 8 p.m. in the T-Mobile Center.
Tech (15-16, 4-14 Big 12) leads the all-time series against Kansas, 26-17 and lost in the two teams' only meeting this year on January 29, 50-57. Tech and Kansas have only met one other time in the Big 12 tournament on March 7, 1998 as Texas Tech defeated Kansas in the finals, winning the game 71-53.
Texas Tech is 19-25 all-time in the Big 12 tournament. The Lady Raiders got their first win at the Big 12 tournament in the Krista Gerlich era last year after taking down Houston in the first round, 74-60. Tech will be facing Kansas for just the second time in the conference tournament, holding a 1-0 record against the Jayhawks.
The Lady Raiders had one of their more complete games of the season against Colorado last Saturday. During the game, Tech made its second most field goals (26) and most free throws (23) of the season. The Lady Raiders only had three other games with a higher FG percentage after shooting 49.1 percent. Making eight 3-pointers in the game and shooting 40 percent from behind the arc, Texas Tech forced 23 Buffalo turnovers, which ties for the most forced in a conference game this year.
Against Colorado on March 1, the Lady Raiders went on a 15-0 run, their largest run of the season, in teh second quarter. During this time, Tech's two leading scorers in Bailey Maupin and Jasmine Shavers were on the bench. In that 15-0 run, Jalynn Bristow made two 3-pointers and Jada Wynn had one of her own. Bristow came off the bench this game - ending it with 13 points, a team-high of nine rebounds and two assists. She also hit three consecutive free throws to force overtime against the Buffs. The bench would go on to score 29 of the team's 83 points in the contest.
Texas Tech is third in the Big 12 and 50th in the NCAA with 23.2 bench points per game. The Lady Raiders had their most bench points against Missouri State, totaling 47 points in the game, more than half of the total points scored by the team that game (72). Texas Tech has also scored 20 or more bench points in 14 of the last 23 contests, with their most recent 20+ bench point game coming against Colorado on March 1 with 29 bench points.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENT
The 11-seeded Kansas Jayhawks are 16-13 on the season and 6-12 in Big 12 play. They have won two and lost two in the last four games – wining against BYU and UCF, while losing to Oklahoma State and Kansas State. Kansas is scoring 66.1 points per game while holding opponents to 67.1 points per game. Shooting 42.3 percent from the field, Kansas averages 31.8 rebounds per game and 11.7 assists per game. There are two Jayhawks who total double-figure scoring this season – S'Mya Nichols with 18.9 points per game and Elle Evans with 14.4 points per game. On the rebounding side, Regan Williams leads the team with 5.0 per game followed by Evans with 4.1.
