Tech gets 9-0 run-rule victory over Kansas on Friday night
LAWRENCE, Kansas – The 2024 Kansas Woman of the Year lived up to the title on Friday night as NiJaree Canady threw her first no-hitter of the season with 12 strikeouts in the No. 13/14 Red Raiders (25-9, 6-1) 9-0 run-rule victory over Kansas (15-13, 3-4) at Arrocha Ballpark.
Canady said that she was looking forward to this series more than any other this season and she did not disappoint the 1,249 fans in attendance – many of whom watched her grow up just 30 minutes outside of Lawrence in Topeka.
Lauren Allred, Demi Elder and Hailey Toney led the offense as they each recorded two RBI. Allred launched her fifth homer of the year in the second inning to after Elder and Kiley Huffman recorded back-to-back RBI doubles to make it a 5-0 game.
Canady struck out five batters in a row starting with the last out of the first inning and then struck out six of the final nine batters she faced in what was an incredible performance by the reigning National Player of the Year.
Toney drove in two runs with a single up the middle in the fourth inning to make it an 8-0 game and give Tech the chance to end the contest early. Elder added another RBI in the fifth for insurance, but it wasn't needed as Canady struck out two batters and Victoria Valdez threw out a runner trying to steal second to seal the win.
Canady improves to 11-4 on the season and now has 149 strikeouts and a 0.57 ERA on the year.
UP NEXT: Tech will face Kansas tomorrow in a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m.
