
Lady Raiders face Virginia Tech in WBIT second round

LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech Lady Raiders head to Blacksburg, Va., for the second round of the WBIT to take on the overall No. 1-seed Virginia Tech Hokies on March 23 at 3 p.m. CT. This is the fifth overall meeting between both teams as they are tied 2-2 all-time in program history. The last meeting between Tech and Virginia Tech came on December 21, 2005 with the Hokies winning in a close game, 69-62.
The Lady Raiders (18-17) are on a roll in their last five games - putting together a 4-1 record in the process. In these last five games, Tech has defeated Colorado, Kansas, Utah and Wyoming. Leading the team in scoring are both Bailey Maupin (17.4ppg) and Jasmine Shavers (14.0). Kilah Freelon is just behind with 7.6 points per game followed by Loghan Johnson's 7.4. On the rebounding side, Freelon boasts a team-high 5.2 per game followed by Maupin's 4.0 per game.
As a team over the last five games, the Lady Raiders are shooting 45.8 percent from the field (114-for-249) and 41.6 percent from behind the arc (37-for-89). Tech is holding opponents to 39.7 percent from the field and to 28.9 from three. Tech has outscored opponents at the free throw line, going 74-for-97 at the charity stripe (.763) to opponents' 66-for-90 (.733) outing. The Lady Raiders have also outrebounded opposition 162 to 141. Individually, Denae Fritz and Maupin lead the way in triples with eight and seven, respectively. There are also seven players shooting .500 or above in field goals - Bird Martin (1.000), Freelon (.652), Sarengbe Sanogo (.600), Maya Peat (.556), Jalynn Bristow (.500), Fritz (.500) and Achol Magot (.500).
Maupin has made her last 25 free throws over the course of four games. On March 6, she went 11-for-11 against Utah, then went 5-for-5 the following game against Oklahoma State, both in the Big 12 Championships. At Wyoming on Thursday, Maupin was 4-for-4 at the line. While she went 7-for-9 against Kansas on March 5, Maupin had made five in a row before the game finished. She has made 36 of her last 40 free throws dating back to March 1.
Junior Jasmine Shavers surpassed the 500 point mark this season at Wyoming on Thursday in the WBIT opening round. In doing so, she became the fifth player in program history with multiple 500+ point seasons as well as 500+ points in back-to-back seasons... She joins Carolyn Thompson (80-84), Alicia Thompson (95-98), Sheryl Swoopes (91-93) and Michi Atkins (94-96) with multiple 500+ point seasons.
Both Shavers and Maupin have scored the only Lady Raider points in two-straight fourth quarters. Against Oklahoma State, Shavers had 10 and Maupin had nine for all of Tech's 19 points in the period. Then at Wyoming, Shavers posted 11 points to Maupin's nine for 20 Texas Tech points in the final quarter of the WBIT first round.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENT
The Virginia Tech Hokies are 19-12 on the season and 9-9 in the ACC. Virginia Tech was the first team out of the NCAA Tournament and therefore claimed the overall one seed in the WBIT. Some key wins have come against North Carolina A&T in the WBIT first round, Clemson, Virginia and SMU. Their most recent losses came against Georgia Tech and Boston College. The Hokies are averaging 75.3 points per game and holding opponents to 69.3 points per game. Shooting 46.5 percent from the field, Virginia Tech totals 34.8 rebounds per game and 16.0 assists per game. There are four Hokies who average double-figure scoring on the season – Carleigh Wenzel (14.3), Carys Baker (12.5), Rose Micheaux (12.3) and Matilda Ekh (12.0). On the rebounding side, Micheaux leads the team with 7.6 per game followed by Baker with 6.3.
