
Maupin scores 23, Lady Raiders advance to quarterfinals

BLACKSBURG, Va. – Behind a 23-point performance from junior Bailey Maupin and 20 offensive rebounds, the Texas Tech Lady Raiders took down the overall No. 1-seed of the WBIT, Virginia Tech, by a score of 69-59 on Sunday evening at Cassell Coliseum.
Texas Tech (19-17) was led in scoring by Maupin with 23 points after she went 7-for-10 from the field, 2-for-2 from behind the arc and 7-for-7 at the free throw line against the Hokies (19-13). Maupin has now recorded her team-best 10th 20+ point game, her 27th double-digit scoring game, her 10th game in a row with at least one three and her eighth game in a row with double-figures. Her perfect 7-for-7 at the line now pushes her to 32 free throws made in a row dating back to March 5.
Junior Jasmine Shavers posted her team-best 32nd double-digit scoring game of the year with 16 points. She went 7-for-7 at the line and led the team with seven rebounds on the day. Leading the way in assists was Loghan Johnson with a career-high of five, while Kilah Freelon added seven points and six boards. As a team, the Lady Raiders outrebounded the Hokies 43 to 24 and recorded 20 offensive rebounds. Texas Tech held Virginia Tech to 3-for-19 from the three-point line (.158), which is under their average of 38.4 from behind the arc, a category they rank fourth in the nation in.
In the first minute of the game, Shavers continued to shoot perfect at the line with two free throws for an early lead. Shavers followed this with a successful and-one play, before Jalynn Bristow nailed a buzzer-beating three for the 8-0 run. Virginia Tech scored five of the next seven points, but Maupin answered with a long triple. The Hokies were able to respond with a tip-in layup as Texas Tech led 13-7 going into the media timeout. The Lady Raiders went on a 6-0 run after this to force a timeout at the 1:45 mark with a 19-7 lead. Tech would get a Freelon layup as the Lady Raiders led 21-12 after one.
The Lady Raiders opened the second period on a hot streak, with Maupin and Shavers hitting back-to-back threes and then Shavers getting a jumper for the 29-12 advantage. Virginia Tech was held scoreless until 5:36 when the Hokies scored a layup. Freelon added another jumper before Virginia Tech scored four consecutive points. Sarengbe Sanogo made a layup right after, then the Hokies answered with three free throws. Kelly Mora came in and immediately connected with a 3-pointer for the 36-21 lead. The Hokies made a triple of their own as the Lady Raiders led 36-24 going into the half.
The Hokies began the third quarter with a 5-0 run and held Texas Tech scoreless for two and a half minutes before forcing the Lady Raiders to call a timeout. The Lady Raiders were able to get a steal and fastbreak layup from Denae Fritz and then a triple from Jada Wynn to stop the scoring drought and push the lead back to 10. Virginia Tech went on an 8-0 run to get within two before Maupin made a floater to stop their momentum. Shavers and Sanogo connected with free throws and Maupin scored a floater to keep the advantage, 48-41, at the end of the quarter.
Maupin was fouled on a 3-point attempt to open the final period, making all three free throws to increase the lead. Then, Adlee Blacklock came in and made a driving layup through traffic for a 53-41 advantage. Toward the end of the quarter, Virginia Tech outscored the Lady Raiders 8-2 with 2:26 left. Maupin made her 32nd straight free throw to put the Lady Raiders ahead 66-53. Then, Shavers made two more free throws before the Hokies got a layup on the following possession. But the Lady Raiders held on to win the game by a 69-59 score.
Up next, the Lady Raiders will face the winner of 2-seeded UNLV or 3-seeded Florida in the quarterfinals on Thursday, March 27.
