WACO, Texas – Behind a ranked doubles win and three singles victories, the No. 14 Texas Tech Lady Raiders earned a top-20 win over the No. 20-ranked Baylor Bears at the Hurd Tennis Center on Sunday afternoon.
Texas Tech (12-2, 5-1 Big 12) picked up a crucial doubles point over Baylor (13-3, 4-2 Big 12) to begin the match. At court three, Baylor's No. 89-ranked duo of Sierra Berry and Na Dong defeated Jermine Sherif and Andreea Lila, 6-2, to get the first doubles win of the day.
But, the Lady Raiders No. 5 pair of Mariia Hlahola and Avelina Sayfetdinova evened the doubles contest with a win over No. 15-ranked Liubov Kostenko and Cristina Tiglea at the top court. Tech went up after breaking Baylor's serve, 2-1, but the Bears answered by winning three consecutive games for a 4-3 lead. The Lady Raiders bounced back, tallying three of the next four games for a 6-4 ranked win. The doubles point would be clinched at court two by Yekaterina Dmitrichenko and Hailey Murphy over Zuzanna Kubacha and Wenfei Yu. Tech took a 3-1 lead and kept the momentum, winning the match 6-3 for the doubles point and lead.
The Lady Raiders kept the winning going when they earned the next point of the match after Sayfetdinova beat Tiglea at court one. Tiglea took a 4-3 lead in the first set, but Sayfetdinova tied it at 4-all with a hold. She would follow by breaking Tiglea's serve, then holding serve again for a 6-4 win. The Russia native didn't give up a single game in the following set, winning with a bagel, 6-0, for a 2-0 Texas Tech advantage in the match.
Baylor, however, got back-to-back singles wins at courts two and four to tie it up at 2-2. The tie was short-lived though after Dmitrichenko picked up a straight-set win over Kubacha at court three very decisively, as she won it by a 6-3, 6-2 score.
The two remaining matches were in third sets, but the Lady Raiders got the clincher at court six when Sherif came back and defeated Yu. Sherif won the first set 6-2, and was serving for the match at 5-3, but Yu would win four straight games for the 7-5 set and forced a third. Sherif responded, only allowing Yu to win one game and claiming five consecutive games of her own as she won it, 6-1, to clinch the top-20 win.
Up next, Texas Tech is back at the McLeod Tennis Center to host Houston on March 21 at 1 p.m.
