No. 12/14 Texas Tech off to best start in conference play in program history
WACO, Texas – No. 12/14 Texas Tech earned its first Big 12 series sweep since 2019 after defeating Baylor (12-17, 1-5) by way of a shutout 3-0 on Sunday afternoon. The Red Raiders (23-7, 5-1) are on the best start to conference play in program history at 5-1.
The game was a pitchers' duel throughout as both teams left players stranded in scoring position and had exceptional defensive effort.
NiJaree Canady was nothing short of phenomenal against the Bears, striking out 11 batters as she improved to 10-3 on the season and lowered her ERA to 0.62 for the year. Canady struck out six-straight batters at one point in the game, but the highlight of her outing came in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Baylor got runners on second and third with no outs and the game still scoreless. The Bears faithful were ready for a big inning to blow open the game but Canady and the defense behind her stepped up.
Canady got the next batter to line out right to the glove of Bailey Lindemuth at third base before getting a huge swing-and-miss strikeout for the second out. With the top of Baylor's lineup coming around, the All-American was able to get the Bear's leadoff hitter to pop out behind the plate to escape the inning still tied.
Tech's offense had its chances as well but were unable to capitalize due to some solid defensive stops in the Bears infield.
All that changed in the seventh, however, as Canady pinched hit to lead off the inning reached first safely after being plunked by the second pitch she saw. Logan Halleman tagged in to run for Canady and before she even had time to think about swiping an extra base Victoria Valdez lined a double into the left field corner which brought her all the way home and gave Tech the winning run.
Valdez came around to score after a sac bunt and passed ball and Mihyia Davis also scored after reaching on a fielder's choice and making her way to third before Hailey Toney brought her in with a sac fly to shallow center field to make it a 3-0 game.
Canady quickly dispelled any ideas of a late-inning comeback, striking out the first two batters she faced in the seventh and led the Red Raiders to their first Big 12 sweep in more than five years.
UP NEXT: The Red Raiders will spend their spring break in South Carolina for a three-game series against the Gamecocks starting on Friday.
