Tech shuts out Texas State before defeating the Aggies on Saturday night
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – No. 13 Texas Tech bounced back in a big way on Saturday night, taking down No. 5 Texas A&M 7-2 thanks to a 10-strikeout outing from NiJaree Canady and home runs from Lauren Allred and Victoria Valdez. The Red Raiders (18-5) also defeated Texas State by a score of 6-0 for their 10th shutout victory of the year.
Tech jumped out to an early lead against the Bobcats (12-5) in game one, scoring four runs in the first inning thanks to four hits and then added two more runs in the second to go up 6-0.
Chloe Riassetto pitched lights out, going all 7.0 innings and needing just 74 pitches to get 21 outs. Alexa Langeliers led the way offensively with three hits and two RBI as Lauren Allred, Katie Lott, Victoria Valdez and Bailey Lindemuth all added an RBI of their own.
The Aggies (18-2) fell behind 3-0 in the first inning as Mihyia Davis led off the game with a triple and Hailey Toney drove her in after reaching on an error. Lauren Allred then smacked a ball out of the park to give Tech the lead.
Texas A&M got an unearned run back, but Tech responded with two more runs in the second on an Alexa Langelier's hit and then a nifty double steal that allowed Toney to cross home.
The Aggies added another unearned run in the fifth but Victoria Valdez put to rest any thoughts of a comeback, roping a two-run homer in the top of the seventh to put the finishing touches on a big win.
Logan Halleman, Raegan Jennings and Davis all recorded multiple hits off the All-American Emiley Kennedy as Canady made sure the Aggies potent offense didn't get going, giving up just three hits and striking out 10 batters.
UP NEXT: Tech will face A&M again tomorrow at 2 p.m. to round out the Texas A&M Invitational.
