LUBBOCK, Texas – In a grueling match that saw four third sets in singles, the No. 13-ranked Texas Tech Lady Raiders outlasted the No. 42 Kansas Jayhawks, 4-2, on Friday evening at the McLeod Tennis Center.
Texas Tech (8-1, 1-0 Big 12) won a much-needed doubles point to open the contest against Kansas (6-5, 0-1 Big 12). First, the No. 5-ranked duo of Mariia Hlahola and Avelina Sayfetdinova dominated their match over Heike Janse Van Vuuren and Gracie Mulville at the top court. The Lady Raider duo went up 4-1, before winning their match by a 6-2 score.
Over at court two, the pair of Yekaterina Dmitrichenko and Hailey Murphy clinched the doubles point against Jasmine Adams and Kyoka Kubo. Tech took a 5-0 lead before Kansas won two consecutive games. Tech would serve out the following game to win it, 6-2, for the lead.
The Lady Raiders extended their lead to 3-0 with wins at courts five and six. At five, Murphy overpowered Adams in a straight-set victory, 6-2, 6-2. Then at six, Jermine Sherif only gave up four games to Meriem Ben Ezzedine to claim her match, 6-1, 6-3.
Kansas put a point on the board with a three-set win at court four to make it 3-1. The remaining three matches at the top three courts were all into third sets as both teams were grinding it out for the win. At court one, Sayfetdinova pushed No. 102 Mulville to the brink. After losing the first set, 1-6, the Lady Raider forced a third with a 6-2 set two. Sayfetdinova saved three match points to make it 4-5 in the final set, before Mulville won 6-4, to make it 3-2 overall.
The Lady Raiders were battling in the final two matches as Dmitrichenko would get the clincher against Kubo at court three. Kubo took the first set, 6-3. But the Lady Raider came back from a 2-4 deficit in set two to win it, 7-5. In the third set, Dmitrichenko dominated from start to finish, clinching Tech's first Big 12 victory of the season with a 6-1 score.
