
Texas Tech tames Wildcats

TUCSON, Ariz. – Recording their fourth sweep of the season, the No. 23-ranked Texas Tech Lady Raiders earned a 4-0 victory against the Arizona Wildcats on Sunday afternoon in a nonconference match at the LaNelle Robson Tennis Center. Â
No. 23 Texas Tech (7-1) got a couple of doubles wins to begin the match against Arizona (6-4). At court one, the No. 6-ranked duo of Mariia Hlahola and Avelina Sayfetdinova recorded a ranked win against No. 28 Midori Castillo-Meza and Martyna Ostrzygalo. Tech took a 3-1 lead and never looked back – winning three of the next four games for a 6-2 victory.
Clinching the doubles point was No. 83-ranked Andreea Lila and Jermine Sherif over Danielle Tuhten and Zoya Chulak at court three. After going down 0-2, the Lady Raider duo fought back to win four consecutive games. Arizona responded by making it 5-4 in Tech's favor, then took a 40-love lead in the 10th game. But, the Lady Raiders saved four break points to clinch the doubles point and lead, 6-4.
Texas Tech then followed a great doubles point with some dominating singles play. First at court six, Sherif took down Chulak for her second win of the day by two decisive scores of 6-2, 6-2 to extend the lead. At court four, Lila also totaled her second victory of the match as she took down Tanvi Narendran. Winning the first set easily, 6-0, Lila would go on to get the straight set win with a 6-3 second set on a break.
Clinching the match was Yekaterina Dmitrichenko at court four over Martyna Ostrzygalo. The Lady Raider earned a 6-2 first set win before the two players went back-and-forth in the following set. Both traded games until it was tied at 4-4, then Dmitrichenko held and broke serve to clinch the victory with a 6-4 score.
At court one, Sayfetdinova was leading No. 34-ranked Usereau, 4-6, 6-2, 2-1, when her match went unfinished. In addition at court five, Hailey Murphy was also ahead of her opponent Tuhten by a 6-2, 2-6, 2-0 score when the match was called.
Up next, Texas Tech has a short break before beginning conference play at home against the Kansas Jayhawks on Friday, February 28 at 5 p.m. at the McLeod Tennis Center.
