Volleyball to face No. 8 Arizona State and Arizona
LUBBOCK, Texas – The Red Raiders (10-12, 2-8) are looking to build off two straight wins as they head to the state of Arizona to take on No. 8 Arizona State on Wednesday at 7 p.m. CT and the Wildcats on Friday at noon CT.
The Red Raiders played Arizona (12-9, 6-5) last week, a match they won 3-0 behind freshmen Kalli Jioshvili Ravva and Kenna McKenzie's offensive outbursts and steady defense on the back end by Sierra Grizzle. As a team, Tech hit a season-high .316 while also recording 11 aces.
This will be the first matchup this season for the Red Raiders against the Sun Devils (18-3, 9-1) who are coming off their first Big 12 loss of the season to Iowa State last weekend. Arizona State has been ranked as high as No. 6 and will be the sixth and highest ranked team Tech has faced this season.
Quick Recap:
Tech recorded its second-straight win of conference play last week after taking Arizona 3-0 in what was arguably their best performance of the season. The team hit over .300 for the first time all year and had 11 aces, second most in a match this season. Jioshvili Ravva and McKenzie continued their dominant stretch of play, finishing first and second on the team in kills, respectively, as they each took over at various points in the match to secure the win.
Quick Hits:
Kalli Jioshvili Ravva has been exceptionally through Big 12 play, leading the Red Raiders in points, kills and attacks while also being second in digs and third in aces. After not playing much to begin the season, the French native has been a mainstay in the lineup and has helped propel Tech to these last two wins against UCF and Arizona where she combined for 33 kills and nine digs while hitting an efficient .229 on 83 attempts.
Freshmen Kenna McKenzie and Shelby Ignash have seen increased playing time over the course of the preseason as they continue to take advantage of their opportunities. Setters Peyton Dunn and Katelyn Cochran have done a stellar job of setting up their hitter for success as Cochran recently recorded 52 assists in a match, a career best. Sierra Grizzle is top 30 in the country in total digs (348) and currently leads the Big 12 in digs per set (4.78) and total digs.
The Red Raiders are the only team in the country to have at least nine freshmen while also having zero true seniors. Tech has three graduate seniors and are one of just four teams in the country that has zero true seniors joining Princeton, Villanova and Memphis in this unique feat. Tech's nine freshmen are also the second most in the country behind St. Mary's, Pacific, Holy Cross and Wichita St. who all have 10.
