No. 11 Texas Tech outlasts Milwaukee

LUBBOCK – Christian Anderson scored 18 points and had seven assists while Donovan Atwell made five 3-pointers to help lead No. 11 Texas Tech to an 80-63 win over Milwaukee on Friday at United Supermarkets Arena. The Red Raiders (3-1) extended their non-conference home winning streak to 41 games with five players scoring in double figures and the team going 13-of-14 at the free-throw line and making 13 3-pointers.
Texas Tech is now set to play in the Baha Mar Championship in the Bahamas next week with a matchup against Wake Forest set for Thursday before playing either No. 2 Purdue or Memphis on Friday. The next home game for the Red Raiders will be against New Orleans on Wednesday, November 26 at noon in the USA.
Luke Bamgboye made his Red Raider debut against Milwaukee and finished the game with four blocked shots and four points, while LeJuan Watts just missed out on a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds. JT Toppin added 10 rebounds and seven points, Tyeree Bryan scored 13 points and Jaylen Petty contributed 11 points with three 3-pointers. The Red Raiders finished the game shooting 13-for-31 (41.9 percent) on 3-pointers and owned a 36-30 rebounding advantage over the Panthers who fell to 2-3 on the season. Atwell shot 5-for-10 on 3-pointers and is now 18-for-38 (47.4 percent) for the season. Bamgboye, who missed the first three games of the season with a lower body injury, averaged 2.2 blocks per game last season as a freshman at VCU and now has 79 blocks through just 36 games in his career.
Toppin was held to single-digit scoring for the first time in 17 games dating back to last season but is still averaging 24.3 points and 11.7 rebounds through three games played this season. Anderson has now led the team in scoring in two of four games to start the season and is averaging 19.5 and 9.0 assists per game. Watts has started his first season at Tech with three straight games scoring in double figures and is averaging 14.0 points and 6.3 rebounds after nearly getting his 11th double-double of his career with his 10 points and nine rebounds.
Danilo Javanovich led Milwaukee with 17 points while Sekou Konneh added 12 points and eight rebounds and Seth Hubbard finished with 11 points. The Panthers were just 4-for-17 on 3-pointers against the Red Raiders but did own a 28-24 scoring advantage in the paint. Texas Tech limited its turnovers to only nine and forced 13 – scoring 18 points off those turnovers. Anderson led Tech at the free-throw line by going 4-of-4 while also finishing with two steals and five rebounds to go along with his 18 points and seven assists.
Texas Tech took a 41-36 lead into halftime with Petty scoring a team-high 11 points and Atwell with nine points. Both went 3-for-5 from beyond the arc in the first half while Toppin had seven points and six rebounds going into the break. Bamgboye had four blocks in six minutes of playing time in the opening 20 minutes while Bryan had seven points. Atwell's second 3-pointer gave Tech a 24-23 lead and an 11-0 run was capped by a Bryan layup for a 29-23 lead. The Red Raiders finished the first half shooting 8-for-16 on 3-pointers while the Panthers were 4-for-11. Tech took a 21-14 rebounding advantage into the break. Â
