Volleyball makes short work of Arizona in win
LUBBOCK, Texas – The Red Raiders (10-12, 2-8) downed Arizona (11-9, 5-5) in a quick three-set match on Wednesday night. Texas Tech dominated the match thanks to a season-high.316 hitting percentage and 11 aces.
Kalli Jioshvili Ravva and Kenna McKenzie continued their strong play as Jioshvili Ravva led the team with 18 kills while hitting .333 as McKenzie added 13 kills on a .391 hitting percentage. Reagan Engler and Shelby Ignash combined for nine kills and Addie Kanouff added three of her own to round out the major scorers for Tech.
The setting duo of Peyton Dunn and Katelyn Cochran combined for 37 assists headed by Dunn's 21. Cochran added seven digs and three aces and Dunn put up six digs and two aces. Sierra Grizzle led the match with 19 digs and had three service aces as fellow backrow member Maddie Smotherman had six digs and two aces.
Tech was firing on all cylinders in their most convincing win of the season as the young group looks to close out the final month of the season on a strong note.
How it Happened:
The Red Raiders jumped all over the Wildcats to start the match as Dunn delivered an ace for the first point of the game, the first of XX Tech aces in the match. Tech pushed its lead to 18-10 led by McKenzie's six kills on only eight attempts. The Red Raiders also had three blocks and 14 digs in the set as they held Arizona to a .107 hitting percentage on their way to a 25-14 win.
Tech kept the pressure on in the second set, going up 10-2 before Arizona was able to muster any sort of a run. The Wildcats got it within three at 16-13 but the Red Raiders scored nine of the next 14 points to put the set away 25-18. Jioshvili Ravva led Tech with seven kills in the set while hitting .545. Arizona hit .393 in the set, but Tech countered by hitting .583 as the offense shined on both sides.
It was all Red Raiders again in the third set as Tech went up 8-3 and pushed that lead to 24-18 before the Wildcats gave the Red Raiders a little scare as they scored five-straight points before hitting a serve into the net to end the match 25-23. Jioshvili Ravva and McKenzie combined for 11 kills as Tech's defense held Arizona to a .143 hitting percentage to grab its second Big 12 win of the season.
