GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Texas Tech Lady Raiders finished their first tournament of the fall with two doubles teams winning their flights as well as two Lady Raiders advancing to their singles flight finals. In total, the team picked up 12 singles wins and eight doubles victories at the Furman Fall Tennis Classic.
On day one of the tournament, the Lady Raiders traveled 30 miles up the road to Clemson due to inclement weather, but that didn't bother them. Senior Avelina Sayfetdinova, who is ranked No. 99 in singles, picked up her first ranked victory of the season in her very first match after defeating No. 108 Gabriella Broadfoot of NC State, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, to advance in flight one. Two Lady Raiders would pick up their first victories in the Scarlet and Black in the same day. First, Hailey Murphy moved on in flight six with a commanding, 6-2, 6-4, win over Mississippi State's Chiara Di Genova. Then, Mariia Hlahola posted a come-from-behind victory over Mississippi State's Gianna Oboniye, 2-6, 7-5, 6-1.
In doubles, all four Texas Tech teams would earn wins to advance in their respective flights. The duo of Hlahola and Sayfetdinova took down Ellie Eades and Elizabeth Stevens of Kentucky, 6-4, while Yekaterina Dmitrichenko and Murphy defeated Clemson's Sophia Hatton and Artemis Aslanisvili decisively, 6-2. In flight three, Andreea Lila and Jermine Sherif earned a victory against Clemson's Annabelle Davis and Candela Tecora, 7-5. Then, Elena Daskalova and Arina Oreshchenkova picked up their first doubles win as a duo when they beat Kinsey Crawford and Sophie Clayton of Clemson, 6-3, in flight five.
On the second day of competition, two Lady Raider pairs earned titles in their respective flights. The tandem of Hlahola and Sayfetdinova picked up wins against Alabama's Sara Nayar and Petra Sedlackova, 6-2, before earning a come-from-behind win against NC State. In that match against Broadfoot and Maddy Zampardo, the Lady Raiders were down 0-3 and 4-5 before forcing a tiebreaker and winning it by a 7-6 (5) score to earn the flight one championship.
Lila and Sherif would claim the flight three doubles title after totaling victories versus Mississippi State's Chiara Di Genova and Carolina Troiano, 6-3, then secured the trophy with a decisive 6-1 win against Wake Forest's duo of Nevana Carton and Kady Tannenbaum in the finals. In singles, Lila picked up a gritty win over Clemson's Annabelle Davis, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3. Oreshchenkova and Murphy each advanced to their flight finals after defeating Nayer (Alabama), 6-3, 1-6, 7-5, and Krystal Blanch (Wake Forest), default, respectively.
On the final day of the tournament, Daskalova picked up Tech's first singles win of Sunday after posting a double bagel, 6-0, 6-0, against Crawford of Clemson. Dmitrichenko also added a win when she defeated South Carolina's Misa Malkin by a 6-4, 6-1 score and Lila collected a victory against Mississippi State's Di Genova, 6-0, 6-4, to close out the day.
Up next, select players will head to Cary, N.C., for the ITA All-American Championships from Sept. 21-29.
