WACO, Texas – The Texas Tech Lady Raiders fall season came to a close on Wednesday evening as the doubles tandem of Mariia Hlahola and Avelina Sayfetdinova fell in the Round of 32 at the NCAA Doubles Championships.
The 3-seeded Lady Raider pair suffered their first loss of the season as they came into the match with an 8-0 record together. Taking on the No. 30-ranked Virginia Cavaliers Martina Genis Salas and Annabelle Xu in the first round, the Lady Raiders and Cavaliers went back-and-forth in the first set.
Tech and Virginia held serve until the set was tied at 4-all. Then, Salas and Xu were able to get the break and take the 5-4 lead. They would hold serve in the following game to take the set, 6-4. Virginia kept up the momentum in the next set, not giving up a single game to the Lady Raider duo to earn a 6-4, 6-0 win and advanced to the Round of 16.
Tech ends its fall season with back-to-back doubles teams in the postseason individual tournament. The spring dual season is set to get underway in mid-January.
