SAN DIEGO – For the first time since 2017, a doubles team has qualified for the ITA National Fall Championships in San Diego as both Metka Komac and Cristina Tiglea made their debut at the tournament on Wednesday.
After claiming the runner-up spot at the ITA Texas Regionals tournament a few weeks ago, Komac and Tiglea were able to secure a doubles wild card into the ITA National Fall Championships, making them the first Red Raider doubles team to qualify since Sarah Dvorak and Sabrina Federici in 2017.
The Red Raider duo got things going after earning a Round of 32 victory over the California pairing of Jessica Alsola and Katja Wiersholm.
In the first set, the Bears duo got the best of the Red Raiders, posting a 6-3 set one score to take an early advantage. But, the Tech tandem settled in and forced a super tiebreak with a 6-4 second set.
The tiebreak went back-and-forth as the two teams traded points until Komac/Tiglea pulled away with a 10-8 score to win the match, 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 (8).
Komac and Tiglea had another tall task ahead in the Round of 16 when they faced Temple's Maiko Uchijima and Jamie Wei.
The Red Raiders took a quick lead with a commanding 6-3 first set. However, the Temple pair evened things up when they won the second set by a score of 6-4. The Owls maintained the momentum into the tiebreak, where they would pull out the victory, 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 (2), to put an end to the Red Raiders incredible run.
Tech closes out its fall schedule at Oklahoma State for the Big 12 Fall Invitational starting today at 10 a.m.
