LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech women's tennis team fell, 4-3, to Denver on Monday afternoon at the McLeod Tennis Center.
The Lady Raiders opened the day with a 1-0 lead after picking up wins on the top two doubles courts to claim the doubles point. Denver struck first on court three, but Tech responded with a 6-3 win from Margarita Skriabina and Olivia Peet over Denver's Tatum Burger and Toni Nelson.
The doubles point came down to court one, where Nell Miller and Lisa Mays held off Pioneers Taylor Melville and Hada Chang, 6-4.
Singles got off to a nice start for the Lady Raiders, who were able to take four first sets; however, the Pioneers made a big push and picked up a couple of third-set victories to knock off Tech.
Texas Tech expanded its lead to 2-0 after Skriabina swept Hada Chang, 6-0, 6-0, on court four.
After Denver got on the board with a 6-4, 6-2 Burger win over Bojana Marinkov, the Lady Raiders got a big win from Lisa Mays on court two to stretch the advantage back to 3-1. After trailing for most of the first set, Mays came back to not only take the first set in a 7-4 tiebreaker, but take the match in straight sets, 7-6(4), 6-1.
The Pioneers forced third sets on both one and six, and would end up taking both matches to claim the 4-3 team victory.
The Lady Raiders will be back in action on Sunday at 3:30 p.m. as the team travels to Fort Worth to face TCU.
