Red Raiders improve to 7-3 on the season, take on the Aztecs Wednesday at 3 p.m. CT.
LUBBOCK, Texas – The No. 10 Texas Tech baseball team returned to the win column with a 5-1 victory at San Diego State Tuesday night at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
Â
The Red Raiders (7-3) peppered San Diego State (5-5) for 13 hits in the contest, taking over what was a 1-1 ballgame through five with four runs between the sixth and seventh innings. Every Red Raider in the lineup reached base safely in the contest, while eight of nine recorded hits.
Â
Tech improves to 1-2 on its road trip and 1-0 in true road games this season. The Red Raiders have now outscored their opponents by a combined 30-8 this season during the sixth and seventh innings.
Â
SDSU starter Aaron Eden contained the Red Raiders through five innings, yielding a run on six hits. The Aztecs made a change to start the sixth, and it didn't take long for Tech to get to the SDSU bullpen as junior Brian Klein hit a single and scored all the way from first on a double from sophomore Dylan Neuse to make it a 2-1 game after six.
Â
Tech continued to rack up the hits in the seventh as it added three more runs. Following a leadoff walk and sac bunt, the Red Raiders connected on four consecutive hits – a first for Tech this season – to extend their lead to 5-1.
Â
Klein led the Red Raiders at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a walk, RBI and run scored. Neuse led three other Red Raiders with multi-hit games, going 2-for-5 with a double and two RBI. Junior Josh Jung added a 2-for-4 game with an RBI and run, while sophomore Cody Masters went 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI and a run.
Â
Right-handed pitcher Bryce Bonnin delivered 4.0 innings in his third start, giving up a run on three hits and six walks while striking out four. His battery mate Braxton Fulford had an impressive game behind the dish, erasing three Aztec base runners.
Â
Freshman Micah Dallas tossed two innings of scoreless relief and picked up his first collegiate win. Dallas struck out five of the seven batters he faced.
Â
After recording just three hits against No. 9 Mississippi State last Saturday, Tech opened the game with three hits in the first inning Tuesday to jump out to a 1-0 lead. Masters got it started with a one-out double over the right fielder's head, then Jung knocked him in with a single to left center. Klein recorded an infield single, but he and Jung were stranded to end the frame.
Â
The Aztecs evened the score in the third, and the game remained even until the top of the sixth. Klein hit a one-out single to right and scored when Neuse blasted a double to deep center field, putting Tech back in front 2-1.
Â
The Red Raiders extended their lead one inning later with four consecutive hits, three of which drove in runs. Freshman Dru Baker got it all started with a walk leadoff walk, then with two outs Masters singled through the middle to bring him home. Jung kept the two-out rally alive with an infield single, before Klein drove in Master's with a base hit to center and Neuse capped the scoring with another infield single that brought in Jung.
Â
Game two between the Red Raiders and Aztecs will take place Wednesday at 3 p.m. CT from Tony Gwynn Stadium in San Diego, Calif. Following the midweek series, Tech returns home to host Wichita State in a three-game series this weekend, starting with a 6:30 p.m. first pitch Friday at Rip Griffin Park.Â
