Lady Raiders win opening matches in NCAA Championships

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Senior Gabriela Talaba and junior Felicity Maltby advanced to the Round of 32 after picking up wins during the opening round of the NCAA Singles Championships Wednesday afternoon.

No. 58 Maltby clinched a spot in the Round of 32 after defeating No. 61 Maria Kononova (North Texas) in straight sets. The win marked Maltby's third over ranked opponents. She will face No. 8 Fernanda Contreras (Vanderbilt) tomorrow.

No. 21 Talaba earned a 6-4, 3-6, 6-0 win over Hawaii's Petra Melounova to advance to the Round of 32. The win marks her fourth win over a ranked opponent and improves her overall record of 16-8 on the season. Talaba will face the winner between No. 15 Michaela Gordon (Stanford) or No. 72 Fatima Bizhukova (Wichita State) on Thursday.

No. 28 doubles duo Sarah Dvorak and Sabrina Federici begin doubles play tomorrow at 3:30 p.m. CT when they face the No. 6 doubles pair of Samantha Harris and Kelly Chen from Duke.
