Men’s Tennis Begins Fall Season at Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational
September 15, 2016 | Men's Tennis
Ronit Bisht, Jackson Cobb and Nikolas Moceanu will make their Red Raider debuts at the Midland Invitational this weekend.
MIDLAND, Texas – The Texas Tech men's tennis team play the first of seven scheduled fall events this weekend at the Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational in Midland, Texas.
The Red Raiders have four singles players and a pair of doubles teams participating in the three-day tournament. Ronit Bisht, Jackson Cobb and Nikolas Moceanu will begin their Texas Tech careers on opening weekend of the fall season.
"The early part of the fall is a way for the guys to get their feet wet," Texas Tech head coach Brett Masi said. "Obviously, the players are going to play bigger matches as the season goes on. We've been practicing for two-to-three weeks now. It's time for the players to get out there and hit against some guys other than their teammates. Nothing beats competition."
Bisht secured the event's top seed and a bye into the Round of 32 for singles. Carlos DiLaura along with Cobb and Moceanu will face off against opponents from Auburn, Abilene Christian and UTA during Friday's opening round matchups.
"For Ronit, he hasn't played a tournament in almost a year now," Masi said. "He needs to see new blood, get out there, compete and see how he's doing. For the freshmen, it'll be nice to see how they handle pressure. No matter what you say, or how much you try and downplay it, you want to impress and do well for the coaches. They're all working hard. They've come in, bought in and done what the rest of the guys are doing with our culture and building that. They're not fighting it. They're taking criticism well. They're looking to want to improve. They're eager. I think as long as they can continue that, they'll start seeing some success."
Texas Tech has four players ranked inside the Oracle/ITA Collegiate Tennis preseason rankings. Alex Sendegeya and Jolan Cailleau check in at No. 83 and No. 95 in singles. Sendegeya and Bjorn Thomson hold down the No. 29 doubles spot, while Bisht is rated second among the ITA's National Newcomer/Freshman rankings.
