
Arella Guirantes Named Big 12 Freshman of the Week

Guirantes averaged 19 points last week at No. 24 Texas A&M, vs. New Mexico
IRVING, Texas – Freshman guard Arella Guirantes was named the Big 12 Women's Basketball Freshman of the Week for her outstanding performances at No. 24 Texas A&M and against New Mexico, the Big 12 announced Monday afternoon.

The winners are selected by a vote of a media panel that covers the conference.

"We are very proud of Arella," Head Coach Candi Whitaker said. "She competes and plays at a high level and continues to prove what a key player she is within our team."

Guirantes averaged 19 points last week and is the Big 12's leading freshman scorer, averaging 16 points per game and shooting 53.1 percent from the field. She also ranks second among Big 12 freshman averaging 7.0 rebounds per game.

With the clock winding down at Texas A&M, Guirantes hit a jumper at the buzzer to tie it up, 83-83, and send the game into overtime. Guirantes scored a career-high 17 points against the Aggies.

Guirantes led the Lady Raiders over New Mexico on Sunday, recording her first double-double as a Lady Raider with 21 points and 13 rebounds. She also had two blocks, three assists and a steal against the Lobos.

The Lady Raiders return to action this week when they travel to Coral Gables, Fla., for the Miami Thanksgiving Tournament. Texas Tech is set to face Fordham in the opening game on Friday at 1 p.m. (CT). To close out the tournament, the Lady Raiders will play Grambling State or Miami on Sunday at 11 a.m. (CT).
