MIDLAND, Texas - No. 41 Texas Tech opens the 2014-15 season this weekend with a trio of netters competing in the prestigious Midland Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational held at the Midland Racquet Club.
"We have a full schedule the next two weeks with the Midland Racquet Club Collegiate this weekend and the Rice Invitational next week," said Red Raider head coach Tim Siegel. "We are still fairly young with five underclassmen, but this is a talented group and I am excited to see the season progress."
Heading to Midland are junior Evan Nix, sophomore Nicholas Melott and freshman Hunter Holman.
Nix, who went 3-5 in singles last season, opens play against Max Andrews of Rice in the Flight 1 Round of 32 singles. If Nix advances, he will face either eighth-seeded Michael Feucht of Lamar or New Mexico's James Hignett.
Melott, who was 3-3 in singles as a freshman, will begin the tournament in the Flight 1 Round of 64 against Carlos Bautista of Tulsa. If Melott advances, he will face either sixth-seeded John Mee of Texas or Rice's Zack Yablon.
Holman, a state champion from Highland Park, kicks off his collegiate career in the Flight 2 Round of 16 against Texas' William Jou. A Holman win would pit the freshman against Abilene Christian's Henry Adams or New Mexico's Sean Baklini.
Nix and Holman will team in doubles, as the duo takes on ACU's Nico Agritelley and Guilherme Gesser. The winner will advance to face second-seeded Tin Ostojic and Tomislav Gregurovic.
