TEXAS TECH vs. HOUSTON POSTGAME QUOTES
DECEMBER 21, 2014
Candi Whitaker
Lady Raider Head Coach
Opening Statement
"I really liked our teams energy and effort, especially on day three of this tournament. It was a hard fought win and they did a great job in a lot of areas. I'm really just proud of how much energy and fight they had in them."
On the biggest offensive adjustment between the two halves
"I don't know how many complete adjustments we made. We did talk about the different ways to attack at halftime. Particularly baseline attacks on certain calls and certain things to look for. I felt like it got really tight and we missed some wide-open layups to start the half. Everything looked very fast and rushed. We took some questionable shots at times. We just needed to settle in, continue to focus on executing and playing basketball. That was really the difference more than anything."
On what she saw from Amber and what she told her during halftime
"Nothing directly to her. The message to the team was to keep playing hard, keep executing both sides of the floor, and be aggressive. I thought Amber did that. We strategically put her in some places to make sure she was going to her strength. She had huge shots and made great reads on things. She took what they gave her and when they gave her the three she knocked it down."
On the girls overall performance
"I was just really proud of the energy, effort and passion they played with. I felt how badly they wanted to win. That's what I'm looking for every night out. It might have been because it was the last game of the tournament, and they were undefeated as well."
On how she feels leaving the tournament
"I feel good. I feel like our kids are going to fight and show up every day. I think that's what coaches want. There are things we need to work on and we are young in a lot of spots that we need to continue to grow in. But excited for every opportunity to play and practice with them."
Amber Battle
Senior Guard
On how they handled the pressure second half
"We were being more patient and trying to just execute. We tried to own our space on the three point line and really attacking the rim."
On correcting her drives during the second half
"We just kept attacking. It's going to fall we just have to keep attacking the basket and we got there."
On being named tournament MVP
"I mean, I owe to my teammates and coaches for putting me in the right positions and really helping me along the way."
Minta Spears
Sophomore Guard
On not getting many shots on the outside during the first half
"I felt at first we kind of let them pressure us and dictate what we wanted to do. Then we kind of took a deep breath, relaxed a little bit, and started to execute our offense a little better."
On the wide open three she had
"I saw Amber take off and I was like `Oh Amber has a lay up.' Then they sprinted back and I found myself open on the backside. Amber made a great pass to me and then I shot it."
On the defense performance
"I feel like we did a pretty good job. I mean we had some defensive breakdowns where we let them drive the middle, and we didn't guard the screens correctly. Overall we had two big possessions where we got stops when we needed. We have things to work on but I think we did pretty good."
On making the All-Tournament Team
"It's exciting, I was really surprised I got it and I'm honored."
