TEXAS TECH vs. NICHOLLS
POSTGAME QUOTES
DECEMBER 19, 2014
Candi Whitaker
Lady Raider Head Coach
Opening Statement
"Good team win. Loved that we had five people in double figures. I thought we shared the ball well. Thought we had good tempo to our offense. We need to clean up turnovers and be stronger with the basketball. Good start to this tournament."
On the performance today compared to Sundays game
"We were just really stagnate and liked our energy the last timeout. I just thought that's what got us going. Just the mode that we were operating in, the energy we brought to the floor and I thought Minta just had a different look about her today. There was just determination that her first three was going to go down and she was just shooting with a lot of confidence. Our team kind of felt that, I think. Amber was doing a great job of rebounding, getting out in transition, and wanting to push the ball to get some easy baskets."
On the quick start of Nicholls and the amount of time each player got
"That was a goal of ours. To try the best we could to keep minutes spread evenly so we weren't getting anybody with too many. Fouls cost us to substitute and our offence got very stagnate there in the first half. Luckily we could maintain a little bit of a lead going into halftime. We just had to focus on executing a little bit better and scoring. I didn't feel like we had a problem with defending as much as turning it over very very weak and soft at the ball at times. We need to be stronger and not beat ourselves."
On the number of free throws made
"At halftime Nicholls was beating us to the line and we weren't aggressive enough the fist half but second half I feel like we did a better job. We got into the bonus quicker second half."
On how the team responded to last game and the long week
"I think they took that personal. That's not who they are, they don't want to perform like that and they want their fans to enjoy watching them. I thought they played well."
Minta Spears
Sophomore Guard
On the difference between Sunday and today
"I think I had some looks they just weren't going in on Sunday. So I think I was shooting with more confidence and things like that. But also against their zone their coverage's were unique so we moved the ball and I think that helped us get a lot of open looks."
On how big those three pointers were in the beginning
"I thought they were pretty big but at the same time I just don't look at it like that. I was open and I shot it. Rayven and Amber were getting in the lane and we were going inside out. They were good threes but they were also in the flow of our offense."
On 15 made free throws out of 19
"Definitely, that was a lot better. I think we've put a lot more focus on that and we've had shooting workouts this week so that's defiantly been an emphasis."
On when others attack the basket
"It's a lot of fun because it opens up the floor and when they kick to me and I'm hitting threes then it opens the floor even more. Then they can get to the basket and finish. I would just describe it as fun."
Rayven Brooks
Junior Gaurd
On the mentality of attacking the lane
"Yes. Coach Whitaker always tells us to get it inside then get it out. It's a better way of seeing the floor and opening up the floor more."
On Nicholls defense
"I felt like they were spaced out. Their zone was more of a man. I was more so getting in rather than pitching it out. I just saw a lot of gaps."
