LAS VEGAS -- Jackie Patterson nearly kept the game going on Thursday but could not match Kiana Johnson's floater with 12 seconds left in overtime as Michigan State outlasted Texas Tech, 50-48 in the second game of the Las Vegas Holiday Hoops Classic at South Point Arena.
Tech (8-2) was able to make up a seven-point deficit in the final minutes of regulation and tied it at 44-44 on a last second 3-pointer by Monique Smalls - capping a 13-6 run in the final six minutes.
Smalls finished with eight points, seven rebounds and three steals.
The Lady Raiders took their first lead since the opening minutes on two putbacks by Shauntal Nobles to jump ahead 48-44 in the extra period, but never could find the basket again.
Nobles played 22 minutes - the most this season for her - while scoring six points and three rebounds - the majority after Christine Hyde fouled out in the second half.
Tech's drive down the court in the final seconds took a turn when the ball was forced loose in the lane and bounced off two or three people before bouncing out of bounds with just seven-tenths of a second left on the clock. The in-bounds pass went to Patterson near the baseline, as she put up a turnaround jumper that bounced off the rim as time expired.
Junior forward Kelsi Baker led the Lady Raiders with 13 points - scoring eight in the second half with four fouls. Hyde finished with nine points and six rebounds while Chynna Brown with seven points and eight rebounds.
Tech shot just 22.2 percent in the first half (6 of 27) and had only six points off turnovers despite forcing 14.
Michigan State (11-1) gave up 25 turnovers while Tech gave up 22.
The Lady Raiders will finish up in Vegas against Oregon State (6-5) at 4:30 p.m. CT on Friday before heading home to play Houston on Dec. 30 to finish non-conference play.
