Bogotá, Columbia - The streak ended on Friday, as Texas Tech senior Raony Carvalho, competing as an amateur, fell in the semifinals of the ITF Futures Copa Babolat at the Hacienda Club to local favorite and No. 1 seed Carlos Salamanca, 7-5, 6-1.
Salamanca, who is ranked 184th in the world, lost in the U.S. Open on Tuesday, before returning to his native Columbia to win three straight matches, including Friday's win over Carvalho. The Texas Tech senior did not go down quite so easy. With the first set knotted at 5-5, Salamanca broke Carvalho's serve to serve for the set victory.
It has been quite a run for Carvalho, who has represented Texas Tech at the last three NCAA Championships in both singles and doubles. Over the last week, he has won his first professional doubles title as an amateur in Medellin, Columbia and then reeled off three straight singles wins over ATP world top 500 players.
Carvalho, the only All-American in Red Raider history, was named 2012 ITA Texas Region Player to Watch.
