LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech women's soccer team moved to 2-0 on the season after recording their second-straight shutout of the year over New Mexico State, 1-0, at the John Walker Soccer Complex in front of 1,252 fans.
"We are certainly happy to be 2-0 with two shutouts," head coach Tom Stone said after the match. "However, we had stretches in both games that highlighted areas where we need to work hard this week. Every win in college soccer is important so we are happy to have gotten through the weekend unscathed. A lot of players had opportunities to contribute and the freshmen got some seasoning. Now it's back to work to get ready for Ole Miss."
The Red Raiders put the pressure on New Mexico State early and often. The Red Raiders had 12 shots in the first half alone compared to three for the Aggies.
Taylor Lytle, a Las Cruces, New Mexico native, gave Tech the lead in the first half with a one-time back post shot that beat Aggies keeper, Erin Wosick. Jessica Fuston started the attack with a sharp turn and blast that was deflected to Lytle who did the rest of the work. Fuston, who was all over the goal for her 70 minutes on the night. She was key to the attack that led to the winner for the second-straight match.
"Taylor (Lytle) had just passed up a great chance to shoot so I was not surprised that she did not hesitate on this one," Stone said. "Good things happen when Taylor shoots. Her mentality going forward needs to be to get to goal - there are not many players who can stay with her when she makes up her mind to run at people in the final third."
Victoria Esson played all 90 minutes and recorded her second-straight shutout. She made two saves with both coming in the first half.
It marks the second-straight year that Tech has won its first two matches by shutout. Last season the Red Raiders didn't allow a goal in its first five matches.
Tech comes back to the John Walker Soccer Complex on Friday, Aug. 26 to face Mississippi at 7 p.m
