FLUSHING MEADOWS, N.Y. -- Gonzalo Escobar fell in the first round of the 2011 USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships, held at the USTA-Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.
The Texas Tech senior lost in three sets to Oklahoma's Costin Paval, 6-7(3), 6-1, 6-4. Paval is ranked 17th nationally.
One of the most prestigious tournaments in the country, Escobar was just one of 32 invitees to the event.
After the first round loss, Escobar, who was seeded second in the consolation bracket, dropped Pepperdine's Finn Tearney, the nation's 19th-ranked player.
Escobar, who is ranked 11th nationally, will now face St. John's Vasko Mladenov, a transfer from the University of Texas, at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
