SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Texas' Kylie Doniak scored in the 11th minute of the first half and it was all the Longhorns would need as the Texas Tech women's soccer team fell, 1-0, in the quarterfinals of the Big 12 Championship on Wednesday.
Jaelene Hinkle led the Red Raiders (10-8-2) with three shots — two on goal — as Tech totaled 11 shots on the day.
"This was a classic 4/5 game," Tech head coach Tom Stone said. "Two even teams and the game had equal swings of momentum. Unfortunately, it swung their way early and by the time we wrestled it back, the damage had been done.
"Obviously, we had more than enough chances to score in the second half with one cleared of the goal line, one that beat the keeper but bounced over the goal and a free kick that was turned away by a phenomenal save from the Texas keeper. When you outshoot your opponent 8-3 and have all the chances in the second half, you certainly expect to be at least tied by the end of regulation."
Tech was on the doorstep midway through the second half when Connor Williams beat Texas down the right wing and served a perfect ball to the back post which beat the keepe. Jaelene Hinkle shot from about six yards out bounced down and over the goal.
"For Jae to even get there was amazing--it was a tough goal to put on target."
Jessica Fuston had another great chance a few minutes later when she turned a blistering header off of a Hinkle corner that had to be cleared off the line by a Texas defender. Tech's last great chance was when it had a set piece from just outside the box. Hinkle hit the free kick over and around the wall towards the unprotected side of the net. It took a dramatic save from All-Big 12 keeper, Alexa Gaul, to turn the shot around the post and out of bounds.
"That was the save of the game--maybe of the season," Stone said. "Jae hit a beauty.
"Hey, after the hurt of this fades a bit, this team will see that they again took this program to new heights. A top four finish in the Big 12, shattering attendance records and playing a brand of soccer that was unprecedented here. Our possession was a weapon this year and we played great defense with three freshmen in our back line. We will spend the spring working on our play in the attacking third and eagerly await the exciting group of attackers that we have coming in 2012."
