AUSTIN, Texas - Texas limited Texas Tech to a season-low 24 kills, pushing the 10th-ranked Longhorns to a 3-0 (25-17, 25-11, 25-22) sweep of the Red Raiders Wednesday night at Gregory Gymnasium.
The loss marked Tech's fifth-straight to begin Big 12 play, dropping the Red Raiders to 14-6 on the year and 0-5 in conference. Texas, meanwhile, won its third-straight match to improve 11-4 overall and 4-1 in league play.
"This is a good environment to play in and Texas is obviously one of the top teams in the country," Tech head coach Don Flora said. "I thought we started out pretty solid and pretty smooth, but we just didn't raise the level of our play. We've got to raise the bar against good teams and match their intensity."
After a back-and-forth start to the opening set, Texas took control of the match midway through the frame, using a 5-0 run to break a 7-7 tie and take the air out of a Tech attack that had stayed with the Longhorns early.
Texas carried that momentum into the final two sets, delivering Tech its third-straight sweep since nearly defeating then-No. 25 Oklahoma a few weeks ago in Lubbock.
The Longhorns kept the Red Raiders on their toes throughout the night thanks to nine service aces, a season high for a Tech opponent. Texas did help Tech on the scoreboard, though, with eight service errors in the match.
The Red Raiders did not post their first ace till late in the third set when Tory Vaughan dropped what would be Tech's only ace in the match.
Amanda Dowdy led the Red Raiders with a match-high 12 kills while posting a .281 hitting percentage after taking a team-high 32 attempts. She also had four digs, marking only the fifth time all year she has not posted a double-double.
Miara Cave and Breeann David added five and four kills each for Tech while setter Karlyn Meyers recorded 18 assists.
Bailey Webster boosted an accurate Texas offense that finished with a .323 hitting percentage as the outside hitter dropped a team-high 11 kills. Haley Eckerman also posted nine kills for the Longhorns while Rachael Adams and Khat Bell added seven and six kills each, respectively.
Tech had the benefit of an 8.5-3 block advantage as Cave, Dowdy, and Mikia Mills all had three stuffs in the match. Nicole Hragyil came off the bench to deliver a team-high seven digs while Vaughan added six of her own at the libero position.
The Red Raiders return to the road this weekend, traveling to Columbia, Mo. to face the Missouri Tigers at 5 p.m. Saturday in the Hearnes Center.
