LUBBOCK, Texas - Missouri prevented Texas Tech from earning its first Big 12 victory Saturday evening as the Tigers broke open a 1-1 tie to take a 3-1 (25-22, 23-25, 25-22, 25-21) victory at the Hearnes Center.
The loss marked the Red Raiders' sixth-straight to open Big 12 play, dropping Tech to 14-7 overall in the process. Missouri improved to 16-7 overall and 3-4 in league action with the win.
"We seemed to get off to a tough start to really every set," Tech head coach Don Flora said. "We could never seem to get into a rhythm and that led us to playing from behind every set. It was really a game where the best serving and passing team won. Everything else was pretty equal. This is a tough one to let get away, but once again we were playing a really good team."
After three close sets early, the Red Raiders had their chances to push the game to a fifth and final set with the score tied at 18 late in the fourth, but Missouri closed with a 7-3 run that included two aces.
The Tigers finished with 10 aces in the match, a season-high for a Tech opponent, breaking the previous mark of nine set only this past Wednesday at Texas. The Red Raiders boasted seven aces of their own but recorded nine errors to the Tigers' three.
Lisa Henning frustrated Tech from the beginning, posting 22 kills and a .312 hitting percentage to go along with seven digs and four blocks. Katie O'Brien and Whitney Little added 10 and nine kills, respectively, as well for Missouri.
Amanda Dowdy led Tech with 22 kills in the match as the senior had one of her top offensive performances thus far, hitting .293 after recording just five errors off 58 attacks.
The output leaves Dowdy just five kills shy of tying Melissa McGehee for second all-time in the category heading into next Wednesday night's match against Texas A&M as she now has 1,328 over her career.
Breeann David also recorded 13 kills for the Red Raiders while Miara Cave added nine of her own. Setter Karlyn Meyers finished with 47 assists to go along with seven digs and three kills.
Despite a .062 percentage in the fourth set, the Red Raiders finished with a .213 hitting percentage, Tech's highest average in a conference match so far. The Tigers were a shade better with a .216 percentage.
Tory Vaughan boosted the Tech back row with 13 digs from the libero position, while Dravon Rangel dropped a match-high nine blocks in the middle.
The Red Raiders will welcome the Aggies for the final time as Big 12 members Wednesday night as first serve is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. in the United Spirit Arena. The match will be aired live locally on Fox News Now.
