
Red Raiders Advance Two Doubles and a Singles at HEB

LUBBOCK, TX - The Texas Tech tennis squad totaled eight match wins at the end of the first day of the HEB Baylor Invitational in Waco, Texas.
Rafael Garcia, the junior from Ribeirao Preto, Brazil, won two singles matches and earned two additional wins in doubles matches with partner, Gonzalo Escobar.
No. 3 doubles seed Garcia and Escobar opened with a win over Texas A&M's Daniel Brown and John Lewis, 8-6. In the evening, they followed with another doubles win in the round of 16 over Rice's Harry Fowler and Peter Frank, 8-4. Garcia and Escobar face OSU's No. 8 seed tandem of Aleksey Bessonov and Rifat Bikyakov at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday in the quarterfinals.
Texas Tech's No. 4 seed doubles duo, Raony Carvalho and Vitor Manzini, won both matches on Friday. Carvalho and Manzini defeated Maryland's John Collins and Jesse Kiuru, 8-5, in the morning and came back in the round of 16 evening match to defeat TCU's doubles entry Paul Chappelle and Zach Nichols, 8-3. Carvalho and Manzini take on Beau Bernstein and Ashwin Vijayragavan from UTPA in a quarterfinal match at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday.
In singles play, Raphael Garcia led the way with two wins for the Red Raiders. He stopped OSU's Ilija Martinoski in his first match, 6-4, 6-3. After dropping the first set to Maryland's John Collins, Raphael stormed back to win the next two sets for the match win, 6-3, 6-1. On Saturday morning, Garcia meets Rice's Peter Frank in the round of 16 with the winner advancing to the quarterfinals.
No. 2 seed Raony Carvalho won his first singles match of the season with a 6-1, 6-4, win over Maryland's Sergio Wyss. Raony fell to Luis Grangeiro from Baylor in his Friday afternoon match, 6-2, 6-1.
Gonzalo Escobar, No. 4 seed, lost his opening round match to Idaho's Marius Cirstea in three sets, 6-2, 0-6, 6-1. Gonzalo withdrew from his opening consolation match due to illness.
Vitor Manzini, a sophomore from Sao Paulo, Brazil, dropped his first match to Baylor's No. 5 seed John Peers, 6-3, 6-3. Vitor downed UTPA's Ashwin Vijayragavan, 6-2, 5-7, 11-9, in the first consolation round and had a bye in the second round. Manzini meets Maryland's Jesse Kiuru in the third round of consolation play on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
