LUBBOCK, TX - The Texas Tech men's tennis travels to Waco, Texas, this weekend for the Baylor HEB Intercollegiate Invitational at the Baylor Tennis Center.
The tournament opens with doubles play at 8 a.m. on Friday and continues until a champion is crowned on Sunday.
This year's tournament consists of 16 schools with over 90 student-athletes competing. The stellar field includes seven players currently ranked in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's (ITA) national pre-season rankings including five of the top 30. In addition to an impressive singles draw, six of the participating doubles teams are ranked in the ITA's national pre-season poll.
The tournament will consist of a 64-player singles A draw and a 32-player singles B draw, as well as a 32-team doubles A draw and a 16-team doubles B draw. There will be consolation matches for flight A and B singles.
Auburn's Tim Puetz is the tournament's highest ranked player in the ITA rankings at No. 11 followed by Texas Tech's Raony Carvalho at No. 16 and Texas A&M's Jeff Dadamo at No. 22.
Raony Carvalho finished the 2009-2010 season ranked 20th nationally in singles and 23rd in doubles with Rafael Garcia. In Waco, No. 4 seeds Raony and Vitor Manzini meet Maryland's tandem of John Collins and Jesse Kiuru on Friday 8:00 a.m. In singles, Raony is a No. 2 seed and takes on Maryland's Sergio Wyss at 12:30 p.m. on Friday while Vitor faces Baylor's No. 5 seed John Peers at 11:45 a.m.
No. 3 seeds Gonzalo Escobar and Rafael Garcia begin their doubles match at 9:00 a.m. Friday against Texas A&M's Daniel Brown and John Lewis. Gonzalo ended last season ranked 39th in the country in singles and finished the year with a record of 24-8 in singles and 21-10 in doubles. In singles, Gonzalo is a No. 4 seed in Waco and opens against Idaho's Marius Cirstea at 10:30 a.m. Friday. Rafael finished last year ranked 23rd in the country in doubles with Carvalho and earned All-Big 12 singles and doubles honors. Garcia begins singles play against OSU's Ilija Martinoski at 10:45 Friday morning.
In addition to the Red Raiders, participating teams include: Air Force, Auburn, Baylor, Idaho, Maryland, New Mexico State, Oklahoma State, Purdue, Rice, TCU, Texas A&M, Texas A&M-CC, Louisiana-Lafayette, UT-Arlington, and UT-Pan American.
