LUBBOCK, Texas - It took almost 85 minutes to get the game-winning goal, but freshman Jessica Disabella did just that on a free kick to give the Texas Tech soccer team a 1-0 victory over North Texas in the second game of the Red Raider Classic.
The game was uneventful in terms of goal scoring chances. It was a physical game that saw both teams trade possessions but not chances.
"North Texas plays a style that is difficult to break down," said head coach Tom Stone. "They challenged us to beat them on the flanks, but our service was disappointing."
Sophomore Tiffini Smith was pushed up front late in the second half and began to cause problems with her pace and vertical runs. After getting behind the North Texas (4-2-1) defense, Smith was fouled about 22 yards from goal on the right side of the 18 yard box. Disabella hit the free kick cross the face of the goal into the far netting for her first collegiate goal in the 84th minute.
"It wasn't a pretty game but it was one that we needed to win," stated Stone. "The environment (1,558 fans) was incredible. Our fans gave us great energy tonight and they definitely earned an assist in the victory."
The Red Raiders (6-1) outshot the Mean Green 14-9.
The win was the sixth shutout of the season for Tech and the first career shutout for sophomore goalkeeper Erin Wikelius as she played all 90 minutes in the nets with three saves.
In the opening game of the night, Oral Roberts defeated Lamar, 3-1.
The tournament will conclude on Sun., Sept. 12, as North Texas and Lamar kick-off at 11 a.m., followed by Tech and Oral Roberts at 1:30 p.m. at the John Walker Soccer Complex.
